    Everton Vs Arsenal

I agree that by the letter of the law, offside is definitely a supportable decision. However I think this is a situation where the law does not do what it intends to do. Whilst Beto doesn’t deliberately play the ball, Gabriel doesn’t intend to pass the ball to Nketiah either. That feels to me to...

    Refereeing Decisions Explained

I can certainly see why in the long-term specialising as a VAR would be appealing to some. Allows them to have an extensive knowledge of the LotG without having to stay in peak physical condition. Opens the door for a lot of intelligent officials who wouldn’t ordinarily be able to or have the...

    Latvia v Wales

This is the sort of tackle where you’ve just got to make a judgement call. His immediate reaction was a yellow and he’s not seen anything to completely change his opinion. He was in a decent position to see the tackle in the first place and so it’s nice to see a ref stick with their on-field...

    New ref advice

I can also see what you’re saying and I suppose we all have an approach. In the moment I guess you make a split second decision on it and have to stick with it. I’d probably be a bit surprised to hear this from an 11 year old particularly at the beginning of the season, (though they have just...

    New ref advice

I think it greatly depends on tone, volume and aggression - more how it is said, not what is said. Also important to distinguish between whether it is a general statement of frustration or a personal attack. “F*** off ref”, I can maybe see OFFINABUS if said loud enough and with enough aggression...

    New ref advice

As others have said he’ll work out his own way of doing things as he does more games. Just a note that any caution he shows for dissent, which is essentially what he showed the yellow for, should be a sin bin at grassroots level (in England). The only time that isn’t the case is if the player is...

    First Match - Report

What are you sanctioning it with though? There’s no way it’s OFFINABUS the way it’s described here. I suppose you could maybe sell an UB caution if you wanted to. Directed at a match official however it’s an easy dissent caution.

    LINO...YOU CHEAT !

Always thought this was a league specific thing rather than county? I’m in Lancashire and all my leagues allow it, so I’m assuming that means Lancashire allows it.

    Match brawl

Would also just add that whilst it is nice to get everything exactly right in such a scenario, doing what you did and sending a couple of players off is a really good way of diffusing the tension. Better to be 100% on a red than wrongly send a player off.

    Match brawl

It’s just such a difficult one I think. I just try to get as many of them as I can. On a couple of occasions I’ve had my notebook out and noted down numbers as the incident is happening, but that’s a challenge in itself. If your CARs seem to be reasonable and honest it also doesn’t do any harm...

    Match brawl

Yes, I think the parents/spectators is a more pressing issue. As others have said in theory it’s better to speak to a manager and get them to sort it, but we all know that sometimes you have to take immediate action. Only you could assess the immediate risk to player safety and you might well...

    Match brawl

Probably need a bit more context here - age group is really important. If they’re older teens they can take a bit of swearing, they all do it themselves - as long as it isn’t offensive, insulting or abusive. If they’re younger kids/children, then it’s certainly a problem. I would also refrain...

    Refereeing Decisions Explained

Been watching a bit of the rugby last night and today and noticed that whilst they seem much more efficient in using video review technology (TMO), it seems to be the official off the field/video operator conducting the final decision. That is something I’d like to avoid in football otherwise...

    Cautioning an injured player

Sometimes if the player is down for a very long time it’s easier to tell them they will be getting a caution and take details etc when they are on the floor, so you can just flash the card when they get up.

    LINO...YOU CHEAT !

I always tell them to flag for offsides if they are 100% sure, and keep their flag down if not. I also tell them that if I acknowledge them with my hand but don’t give a decision then they should put the flag down. I ask them not to call fouls, obviously, and make it clear that ins/outs are...

    U18 drinks break

I did one drinks break per half today, but pushed half time to the absolute maximum for the competition, which was 10 minutes. 9:30 kickoff and it was still really tough.

BBC News - Ban overturned for assault of official

Absolutely ridiculous. The guy was literally convicted of assault off the back of this. If the FA wanted to make a statement here they could do, yet they’ve decided not to even make an effort. There’s very little FA support for referees in the grassroots game as it is. Communication is always...

    New card wallet set recommendations

You make a good point about the number of registered players. A lot of teams in my area only seem to have about 25 players each but when I do occasionally get a team with 30-40 it would be completely pointless. Waiting for team sheets seems like a better solution but also incredibly stressful...

    New card wallet set recommendations

Thought I might give Refsix a go this weekend and see if it works for me. Does anyone know if there is a way to get a list of players when showing a card rather than the number pad? For most of my games I can access player names on Fulltime but obviously they have no numbers assigned. Would be...

    Refereeing Decisions Explained

I agree. I thought Taylor and Gillett probably had the best communication out of any of the clips.
