    IFAB Q & A question

Not sure I agree with this, and would like the thoughts of the learned minds on this forum: As the "disciplinary sanction procedure" (I'm presuming this means giving the yellow card to the player who SPA'd) how can the re-start have been delayed? Surely if you are issuing a card, you can't...

    Penalty “shout” thoughts

So, I’m refereeing a great cup tie, competitive, but not fractious, 2 mins to go, blues break into red’s penalty area, red commit a foul - no doubt in my mind, penalty! Sharp blow on the whistle, point to the spot. I’m in a great (and v credible) position to make the call (and it is a penalty)...

    Player kit questions

Evening all, I have a couple of questions regarding player kit that I’d like your help with. I have looked through the good book, but can’t find anything definitive- if there is, it would be a great help. Snoods. I know snoods are banned, and a google search says they were banned in 2011...

I would have got this wrong …

Morning all, and happy new year. Saw this online the other day, and thought the ref had made a blunder. As the keeper did not pick up the ball, I figured no offence had occurred, but reading through the comments and some of my own research tells me I was wrong. (Probably why my 2026 kicks off...

Ref halts game for 10 mins for spectator abuse to assistant

Just seen this on Twitter, the ref at Stavely paused the game for 10 mins and asked the Chairman to expel a spectator for calling the assistant referee a “knobhead”. Any thoughts, or any more details?

    8 second law example

I came across this on Twitter/X . Scroll forward to about 1 min 10 secs in: keeper catches the ball from a corner, ends up being penalised for holding the ball for more than 8 seconds. Have a watch and see what you think. Keeper could have got to his feet quicker, but I think this has been...

    Count down, or count up

I’ve been thinking about the “8 second goalkeeper holding the ball” law change, and the mechanics of how to actually implement it in practice. For the final 5 seconds we, the referee, will now display a five-second countdown gesture when a goalkeeper holds the ball. My initial thinking was that...

    Integrity in football- interesting article

Morning all, I came across this article in The Guardian today, nothing we men and women in black aren’t aware of, but interesting 2 minute read nonetheless: https://www.theguardian.com/football/2024/dec/30/football-integrity-problem-professor-dan-hough?CMP=oth_b-aplnews_d-5 This is the book it...

“Friendly” kick - what are you going to do here?

Saw this on Twitter, have no context, no idea who the teams are etc., Thought it might be of interest. What would you do in this situation?

    Hail

I’ve refereed in the cold and wet before, and I’ve refereed in the baking heat before - and paused the game for drinks breaks as appropriate. Ive ref-Ed in hail before, but yesterday the hail was biblical. About 5 mins after kick of it started to hail, and hail heavily. Normally hail is a one...

    Drop ball

I think this is a great clip for a learning/training point of view - lots to think about. I suggest you watch the clip first and ponder on it yourself before reading any comments, either in the twitter thread or this thread, and decide what you’d do/would have done before commenting yourself or...

    The games changed!

Yesterday was my first game of the season. Unlike many on the forum, I quite enjoy pre-season friendlies, and for the first half, this was no different: two good teams, playing good football and everyone, myself included, enjoying the game. Five minutes into the second half and, without...

    Unpick this!

This popped up in my twitter feed: Who’d be a ref?!

    Six seconds

Can a referee be both right and wrong at the same time? I think this video suggests they can. Watch from 2 min. 25 secs if you want to jump straight to the incident. Roth watching with sound on to hear the commentary. I think we’ll all agree the ref was right in law … but would you have done...

    Red, yellow (or no card?)

Scenario: Blu v white, blue attacking. ”Soft” foul by white on blue in attacking third, near touch line. Quite a few bodies around the free kick site, so I’m heading over to manage a ceremonial fk (chance for quick fk has passed). White is retreating, with his back to the ball, blue throws...

Keeper sees red for peeing in the hedge

Sounds like an interesting game … https://www.somersetcountygazette.co.uk/news/20899252.fa-cup-blackfield-langley-shepton-mallet-unusual-red-card/

Pen, or no pen? You are the ref!

Just seen this. Took me a while to work out what has happened- it seems the ball has hit the wheel at the base of the goal and spun back onto. 5he pitch. Defender has then caught the ball and thrown it back to the keeper. Nearly everyone (including ref) thinks it’s a goal kick, but there is the...

They didn’t teach me how to deal with this at Ref school (best with sound on):

    Oldham free kick

Have a look at this free kick from Oldham. I think it should have been disallowed, when the ball was struck at least one Oldham player was within 1m of the wall. Easy for to spot when watching several replies in my armchair, less easy for our man in the middle. Any thoughts?
