MLS VAR Review

PRO (the US version of the PGMOL) has been releasing a weekly VAR review from MLS. This is information straight from the top of the referees organization and it's getting better every week. It's very transparent and includes the entire video feed the VAR used in real time. You see every angle they looked at. The article includes time references and even some of the communication between the VAR and referee. They'll even call out a wrong decision by the VAR/referee.

MLS fans love to rip on PRO and referees (like very other league's fans), but I've seen nothing but praise for these weekly articles. Even if fans still disagree with the decision, they at least appreciate the transparency.

Would you like to see the Premier League/PGMOL do something like this next season?

Wow, this is so much better than the absolute crap we get served up in Australia's version. In that one, they treat the fans like idiots and pretend the VAR doesn't make a mistake by either supporting clear errors, or just not including the bad calls at all (on the rare occasion they might go as far as 'not entirely agreeing' with it).

They've started including the audio after the Gillett video went viral, but they still only include the ones that make the league look good and often don't even include the controversial ones - not to mention the times VAR should have become involved but didn't. Presumably because the VAR was off in line for another Big Mac or something (our VAR is sponsored by Mcdonalds)

The general manager of PRO is Howard Webb and he was at Rotherham RA on Thursday and he gave a 2 hour presentation on how VAR is used, the complete protocol. We also saw plenty of incidents with live feed from the ref, AR and VAR officials which was good.

Interestingly, it was explained that the MLS are going to trial explaining the decision to the crowd next season like they do in American football. Video replay decisions and explanations are an expectation of sports in America.
