Restart by Injured Player

Was at the glasgow derby tonight - celtic v Patrick thistle ;) - and a celtic player was injured so had to leave the FOP. The restarting throw in was taken by celtic and then kicked out by thistle. The referee waved the celtic player on, however, he went to take the new throw in but the ref and 4th official stopped him.

Is this in the LOTG? And what is the procedure for subs taking throw ins.

Funny enough Micky we were not talking about this not long ago what it is a sub does not become active till his not crossed the line so once he crossed the line he can take it

Makes you wonder why, in the interests of 'man management' they didn't just tell him to step onto the field of play first....

Having said that, the o/p isn't talking about a sub but, rather, a player who has gone off to be treated for an injury.....so the interpretation of the law re subs doesn't apply here, only the issue of whether the ref has given him permission to re-enter the field of play.....which has nothing about having to set foot on the field of play

Ref waved player on, then as he went to pick ball up to take throw in, ref and 4th official stopped him from taking it. He was allowed to enter the park before the throw in was taken.

Do the laws actually state that a sub is not allowed to take a restart?

The substitution is complete once the substitute enters the field of play.

Can't he just come on, then wander back to take the throw/corner etc?

Yes, he can wander onto the pitch and then go back off to take it. However, he cannot run down the touchline to take a throw in without having stepped foot onto the pitch, because he has not completed the substitution procedure if he doesn't step foot onto the pitch before restarting play.

He shouldn't do that anyway as he needs to come on at the half way line

I've seen it at FL level, where there was a throw in near the half way line, and when the substituted player came off, the sub coming on took a few steps down the line and picked up the ball, ready to take the throw in. The ref and 4th man both went over and told him to step onto the FOP, and then allowed him to take the throw in.

You are correct, it shouldn't happen, but could!!
