I love reffing, but this season has put me off on the grounds of my safety.
I moved to a different league and while I’ve had challenging games in my previous league, I have never had this level of abused violent threats, actual violence against me from players, coaches, and parents.
It reached a stage where I was thinking it must be me in the middle that is causing this, but at finals days, it turns out that many are thinking of quitting as it’s unruly. I was also running the line and watched a game descend into a huge brawl because the players and parents were angry that they lost.
This isn’t worth it. One day I will end up getting seriously hurt. I’m seriously considering quitting.
