Level 4 Referee
Wales v Kazakhstan - Busy first half.

Penalty waved away for a foul in Dan James, which was a checked and supported, I’m probably in agreement as the contact is worsened by James hurdling the tackle.

Penalty awarded for handball against Conor Roberts. Harsh but expected with the widespread interpretation of handball.

Caution for KAZ #10 after the ref missed it real time and VAR recommended a red card. Actually thought the caution was the better outcome and liked this use of VAR, and a referee standing by it.

The handball is extremely harsh, he seemed to be trying to move his arm behind his back and the ball hit it before it got there. There's no way that would be given in England, but we know EUFA and FIFA guidelines are much stricter.

For the SFP VAR review, he caught him with studs very high up the leg with the ball long gone, I was very surprised that he produced a yellow after the check. The offending player was certainly surprised, his body language suggested he thought he was walking. It is extremely rare that a FIFA referees goes to the screen and doesn't follow the VAR recommendation.

As it should be! Since the VAR and R should have the same training and are applying the same standard, it should be rare at any level that the R does not reach the same conclusion—and one would Hope that FIFA crews are among the very best both as R and VAR.

(To be pedantic, technically the VAR doesn’t make a recommendation other than that the R review for a possible error. But since the VAR can only,y do that if the VAR concludes there was a C&O error, that is really a technicality in my perception.)
