The Ref Stop

10 year challenge!

The Ref Stop
Inspired by the OP, I did some stats, comparing league position in 2009 and the position today.

Bournemouth are the clear top performers, rising some 77 places up the league, compared to their south coast cousins Portsmouth who (along with Sunderland) have had the worst decade, falling 31 spots.

You can see more, and find out how your* team did, on my blog:

*apologies to those north of the border and beyond, I only looked at the English leagues

We, SUFC, must be stuck in glue, 1no. place currently different to 2009 and if WBA win tonight, then exactly the same!!!

Excellent work. Bournemouth and Brighton have risen through the league's on the back of huge investment relative to the league they were in at the time. This also coincided with recorded tv revenue for PL sides when they got into the PL. True success is the likes of Rotheram, who have reached the Championship on what was a modest League 1 budget. Maintaining success whilst adhering to a relatively modest budget is rare, and it is for that reason that I think Burnleys achievements outstrip the rest.

Burnley is still a steaming cess pit and their ground is only suitable for growing vegetables but their success has been fantastic

The year the Russian flew into the immanently bankrupt Chelsea, Newcastle finished one place above them (or very similar)
Ten years ago, we were two points behind City
Virtually everyone bangs on about how some clubs (like NUFC) haven't won anything for aeons, but the glaring truth is that very little is determined on the FOP these days. Partisan droves of fans trawling every corner of the country count for nowt and gate receipts are virtually irrelevant. The only deterministic factor affecting a top flight club's fortunes, is who flew in on an a helicopter with a fat cheque book
Leicester, albeit fortunate with their ownership were the exception and I have some time for long established clubs who haven't just bought their trophies, otherwise i'm apathetic with a capital A
On a less depressing note, their is still a sense of sporting achievement below the top flight. A safe haven from VAR for people who value sporting merit :)
But maybe Newcastle or any other team may have won a cup if they had put their first team in instead of a reserve team
