The Ref Stop

Villa v Blades

The Ref Stop
So same game last season in the league down.....we be calling it horrendous!
But because a watch never bleeped, its ok?
Not for me.
The actual decision...is the same. In any game.

If you have the ability to magically be right on the corner flag every single time there's a close goal/no goal decision while still being able to properly judge offside, then that's wonderful.

We all know that's not reality. I had a game last year where the offside line was 30 yards from goal, a player shot from 35 yards, and I couldn't tell if the ball was over the line even though I was sprinting down the line from that 30 yard spot. Following the game, the coach told me that one of the parents on the line said the ball "probably" was over the line, but he didn't say a word about it to me because he knew I was hustling. I can't run faster than a ball that's shot from 35 yards out.

where should the AR be during open play, never mind goal line calls?
In line with the second last defender
In this case, yes, magically, on the corner flag.
Thats his role and that is exactly the position he should be in

And the same issue with players that caused the issues with Hawkeye would have caused issues with the AR on that side as well. The Villa player is over the goal line and very likely blocked the AR's view.

am saying that happens same game last season, AR is giving goal
He this season has not given a goal, not because he cant see its in, but because the watch has not beeped
The watch beeping, is not part of the laws, the ball being over the line under the bar etc, is
Basic refereeing, goal, correct call.

I think it's almost a different game at that level though, in terms of the technology anyway. Imagine if he gave the goal, and it turned out that the ball was literally 1mm or less on the line and GLT was correct. Of course it did go in, but It wasn't more than a yard and also his view was definitely impaired. I think it's unfair to blame the AR for not going against the technology that hasn't failed in over 9000 matches

Rule One of VAR, iron out the CLEAR & OBVIOUS errors in a game..... They can apologise all they want, they had 3 chances to put it right, Oliver’s and ARs eyes, GLT and VAR, and all failed miserably.... that could cost us £25 million.... just saying!!

It's amazing that the GLT cameras are around the stadium rather than in the goal frame. I've said that was the case before and was shot down

Maybe they should have a 'people's vote' on a replay

total get that
But to rely, as in, rely on technology, over human judgement has proven futile
Its an aid, and, yes, till today a great one

i will maintain last season, even at Villa, with fans, the AR is giving that.

of course we will never know.
It should not be technology which is the prevailing factor in a game of football this seaaon, and the same game last season,
If it is, we can just put computer players out and take the final score from them

Yeah I get where you're coming from. Definitely right about potentially becoming reliant on technology

No, it's not unfair......he failed to flag.........that added to the failure to instigate a review....

Why do you keep talking about last season? Goal line technology has been in place in the PL since 2013/14, it isn't anything new.

It's in the Championship I believe, but not League One and Two unfortunately

Ok i mistaken, i wrongly thought Championship did not have GLT
My bad

bottom line, its a goal , AR knows its a goal but cos his watch aint told him its a goal, he aint giving it, or even, questioning it
