I'm not sure whether in this politically correct era,referee exhibitionism is the answer to defusing potential flashpoints ...
Tbh if that's what it takes to defuse it, then, unorthodox as it may be, there might be a 1 in a million occasion where it turns out to be the best thing to do
I knew a ref once who when it all kicked off, simply stood and looked up at the sky singing/humming, I think his theory was to take attention away from the brawl and onto him with a view to it quietening down........

Remember that in England now you cannot flash the red card below the National League Premier. Doing that will cost you badly in any observation unless it is to defuse an immediate flashpoint, and there was no sign of that here.
