The Ref Stop

Match fee for friendlies

I just ask for the standard rate for the league they play in, which where I am at grassroots level is generally a £50 flat fee from this season.

I’ve had a few teams moan that other refs do it cheaper for friendlies. In which case, I reply, hire them, not me.

At the end of the day we’re a dwindling commodity so just take what you think is acceptable to yourself personally, and don’t accept less.

Well I said it would be £25 which I didn’t think was outrageous. I think different areas have different expectations

I get paid £25 for under 10s .. our local OA league has gone up to £45 this season flat fee.

I base it around what I know I can get .. if someone offers me £20 .. I know I could get an OA game for £45 so no thanks.

Also.. having played football quite recently subs are usually paid by each player .. they must make a profit paying £20 for a ref!

Well I know they charge £5 for over 45 mins and £3 for under 45 mins. Having played for them a couple of times in the past. This will be my first full year of not playing and running a side. They’ll easily be clearing over £50

As a general rule I won’t accept anything less than the standard league fee for a friendly. It’s £35 for any game from U15 upwards in my league (no mileage), so it seems reasonable to ask for that.

That being said, I’ve accepted £30 for an U16 friendly this morning. The ground is about a 30 second walk from home, so it’s basically at zero cost for me and it’s for a team I know pretty well. Very much the exception though.

I come at this from a different angle. Pre season friendlies are my pre season too so I'll often do a game for less than the going rate just to help get back into action. For me friendlies come via direct contact from one of the teams so I can pick and chose what I accept. Mid season or post season friendlies I'd be looking for the full fee.

I scrap mileage and just charge the match fee for the league they are in, however that’s ordinarily because I’d keep friendlies local and the mileage would be minimal. If I was called and someone needed me desperately somewhere 10+ miles away then you’re paying me for that
