Through the worst of the COVID times, I ran our county LOTG exams online (Zoom). Everyone needed to be on video the whole time and questions were sent by e mail at the start. Whilst not foolproof, the success rate was very much in line with what I'd previously seen face to face.
@Russell Jones Did you use Slido?

I first tried using Kahoot (a similar quiz app). Worked well but some of the candidates felt extra pressure vs the in person test because of the time limit / question. So instead just decided to send out all the questions at the start, gave a deadline for answers to be e mailed back and then watched the candidates on the screen for the duration of the test

Pros and cons to both really.
Obviously time limits are not conducive to open book tests, but really good for testing actual knowledge.
And more in line with what happens on a matchday where once we determine an offence we have to know the restart pretty sharpish.

The organiser can set the time limits with Slido - we allowed a generous 10 seconds for each of the multiple choice answers to be entered

Personally not a fan of Slido etc with a time limit. It always takes me a couple of read throughs to actually understand the question even before I then read the options. Shos me a video and I can understand immediately. Reading text is not my learning style.

Understood - the course for newbies includes Slido to check knowledge of law (without announcing everybody's scores) plus video examples for Law 12 understanding, plus practical experience as a referee and assistant referee, so all learning styles encompassed within the two days👍

For a lot of exams this makes sense. However, a referee needs to know the laws without being able to look them up or google them.

But the main problem with non-invigilated exams is that you have no idea who is taking them.

I suspect the FA think it doesn't really matter at grassroots levels, and I suppose they might be right. I got a lot out of just being on promotion but that was mostly discussions between candidates on in-service training days and online groups organised by my county.

As a teacher - totally agree here. I think that exams are there for a reason.

However, if there are many, many more questions that require some sort of looking up to find answers, as an exercise to prove understanding of all of the aspects (with an exceptionally high pass mark), this could be quite effective as it is still testing that they know the stuff.

But yes - you can't beat a good old test!!

Or as I do, call it a quiz and just say that there isn't a pass mark, but a fail mark... And they might have to do a re-quiz...

Looks like this has changed again, it's back to 7, 6, 5 for this season.

... aaaaaand it's changed again, mid-season. If you're a level 7, 6, or 5 if you log into wholegame and select account, scoll down to Referee you'll see it's been switched to the new format (5a, 5b, 5c).

I suspect this is a mistake because they've just done all the promotion forms with the old levels on them. It could switch back at any moment. Exciting!

I have heard from a reliable source that the 5a, 5b and 5c idea is going into play next season. Not a fan.
