Australian A-League grand final decided by VAR error

The Referee Store
I'm waiting for a report on an Asian gambling ring to have hacked the software...

While this is certainly a failure of the VAR system, it's worth bearing in mind that without VAR the same error would have occurred and everyone would be blaming the AR and demanded the use of VAR.

You can't argue that with 100% certainty though - it may be the NAR kept his flag down because he wasn't sure (although, he really should have been) - relying on the fact that there was a VAR available who would review the decision if a goal was scored. If no VAR, we may well have seen his flag go up.

In theory. And it really shouldn't make a difference - but how confident are we that officials aren't ducking decisions because of the VAR?
Referees I'd argue definitely are. AR's?

The only answer is to mark the referees and assistants down for an incorrect KMI even if the VAR bails them out. That way if the referees makes a no decision, or more importantly the assistant keeps his flag down, they are still penalised even if the VAR then makes the decision for them.

Without that safe refereeing will apply, just as it has done for years.

Safe refereeing? Is that a bit like safe sex @RustyRef?

The refs here didn’t get the rubber the green then!
Not sure whether it was a hardware or a software failure!
