Not a foul, not a C&O error for me.
There’s no world in which that should be a penalty.
It’s clear simulation from Jota and should be a Newcastle FK and YC to Jota.
We seem to have arrived at a point where contact means there’s not a clear and obvious error, which defeats the whole object and simply cannot be right.

Caution for simulation there for me. Really feel for Anthony Taylor as he, along with his ARs have had a really good night before that - now this may be all that gets discussed.
It’s all well and good saying it’s not a C&O error, but I think most would agree that it is not the right decision. I’ve said this before but the entire C&O thing needs re-looking at. It doesn’t work.

It’s crazy that it’s got to the point now where a player is being rewarded for clear simulation. There’s no way you’d give it if it was outside the box.
For me, it looks like he feels he is t going to get to the ball after he’s knocked it past Dubravka and decided to take 2-3 steps and go down like he’s been shot to try and get something out of it. Really really poor on his side.

Agreed on AT and the rest of the team, aside from the pk, they’ve had an absolutely cracking game.
I disagree. It's pathetic and its disgusting but he has won his team a penalty. If we keep rewarding players for this we can't be surprised that it happens
If there is one thing that frustrates me the most it is seeing dives be rewarded, regardless of circumstances. It is not a brief error in judgement or a mistimed tackle, it is clear and deliberate cheating. In a game with VAR and the ability to endlessly review decisions, it is even more annoying to see it not just go unpunished, but be actively rewarded.
Feels like the way to sort this would be to allow a review when the VAR thinks the decision is an error and the referee has been misled by simulation - that situation should not require the error to be clear and obvious.

Said it before and I'll say it again; do away with VAR in its current setup. Give each team X amount of challenges per game. Then it's on them to request onfield review.

He must realise they there is no advantage and Liverpool want Joelinton to be booked for the blatant cynical SPA on Slobozlai. AT then misses a blatant push in Diaz’s back just outside the box which should also be YC. Because of these two mistakes the Liverpool players don’t trust him and they get two dissent cards for Diaz and TAA.
Later in the game the one that really annoyed me was when Gomez got kicked over beside the box next to AT and he did nothing.
The conditions were horrible, unusually muddy, but AT lost the match in that period before half time.
Why Longstaff wasn’t cautioned for starting the handbags also a mystery.
Disgraceful from Jota. I think he was saved by the tiniest contact from the GK’s trailing elbow but it was trifling, a step, then a dive. Really annoying when he had a tap in on his trusty left foot.

Agree with the above almost word for word. The "advantage" was rubbish, came to nothing and then resulted in no caution for Newcastles combatitive midfielder who would have been a strong 2YC candidate for the rest of the game. Awful advantage, followed by the missed foul that led to Diaz caution means a really poor 10 minutes overall going into HT.
If Newcastle had requested a review of the penalty after it had been awarded and VAR decided not to intervene like it did yesterday Newcastle would be even more aggrieved than they are now. Not only have they conceded a penalty but they've used up one of their appeals.
The problem here is that VAR did not overturn the on-field decision even though it is an obvious error. Whether it meets the "clear and obvious" criteria set by the VAR protocol I don't know but if VAR doesn't overturn this sort of injustice it's being wasted.

What I'm saying is, if the teams get challenges, the referee has to go to the screen. There is no VAR.
Then it's down to onfield referee whether they'd like to overturn their original decision or not
i dont think Taylor will be happy with the 2nd pen yesterday on seeing the replay and he'll have appreciated seeing it for himself and being empowered to change his decision, something which is almost impossible now.
They use Advantage to avoid issuing Cautions
AT created a problem for himself by playing Advantage because the offence was exceptionally cynical. The eagle eyed observer would also have noticed that Bruno escaped a Dismissal for an Advantage played late in the second half. The outcome that benefits the aggrieved team the most conflicts with the Referee's instruction to keep players on the FOP as much as possible
Personally, it's my opinion that a crackdown on cheating was more important than prioritising player behaviour towards the Match Officials. That puts it into perspective how much I deplore cheating
One of these days, Honours will be decided by a VAR check of this nature. The thing that keeps VAR tolerable for most, is these scenarios rarely impact the top teams for lots of reasons (like time spent in opposition Penalty Areas etc...). We did go through a phase in which the PGMOL were scrutinising 'cause and effect' when it comes to players going down for PKs, but like most whims, that one has gone out the winda
Fortunately, it didn't effect the outcome of a very one-sided game
