Tierney tells De Bruyne 'on the whistle', De Bruyne takes the free kick and Aguero scores. Tierney brings it back for a retake and cautions De Bruyne.

Surely a caution is harsh there, what is the reason?

Ref killing the game according to Jenas
No comprehension of what constitutes a 'quick free kick' despite a long playing career

Could also be considered delaying the restart, as kicking the ball away in fact delayed the restart.

Whether the caution is needed is an interesting question. Seems that taking the goal out does all that is needed--perhaps R felt that the caution was needed to sell how bad the action was that it warranted pulling the goal back? (Or perhaps there was something else earlier in the game that made him more likely to caution?)

Had something similar at an RA meeting. Question was: Penalty given, player takes it before the referee has signalled? Everyone said 'retake and caution'. Which of course was met by, what is the caution for? A retake is suffice.

The resident archiver will be better placed am sure, but, the caution was mandatory a few seasons back, or, if am mistaken and it was not, it was certainly given as an instruction/directive at that time to elite refs where I am. Probably 2010 ish.

I'm off down the casino to stick all my dosh on one number. Similar chances of 3 points tonight. We've allegedly had a £20M deal agreed today. According to the commentary, City have 17 players who cost more. Thought Tierney was very good. I wouldn't have sent DeBryune off. Interesting that the ref immediately turned a blind eye against Perez SPA to balance the books
Miracles happen 😀 Benitez is in the dressing room turning water into wine

Phil Down fighting a losing battle here. He's explained it perfectly but they are all arguing with him.

IIRC, there used to be guidance on PKs that if it was done a second time the kicker should be cautioned for PI--I don't see it now in a quick look.

I'm not advocating for a caution on the play that happened--but I don't think Tierny is "inventing" anything. If ITOOTR the kick was deliberately taken before the whistle after he was told to wait for the whistle, it can clearly fall under the general concept excessively delaying the restart (and is very similar to deliberately taking a kick from the wrong spot). But it seems wholly unnecessary to me unless something else was going on before this.

It would be interesting to see the official reason for the caution--do those get published on these games or do you just get whatever the press reports, which may not even be an actual caution reason?

I read pleanty of reasons why it can be a caution but not much about why it shouldn't.

There are pleanty of times when you can do with or without a card. Contex then comes to play. I haven't seen the OP. PL referees (and indeed every other top flight referee) is taught, if it can be managed without impacting your control, leave the card out.

If we card players every time we find a reason to card then most games would be abandoned.

I'm not sure that he would've caution had Aguero not put the ball in the net? As soon as it went in and the complaints started he's yellow carded KDB to emphasise that he gave a clear instruction to KDB and he ignored it.

I'm a city fan but I had no problem with the caution. The referee gave a clear instruction about the restart which was ignored.

I agreed with the referee on BT Sport regarding the KDB tackle being careless and therefore no 2nd yellow. Perez a minute later was a 2nd yellow but after the scenes earlier with KDB, Perez knew that he'd get away with it. I'm not sure any ref would be cautioned Perez there.

Overall I think PT had a decent game. Got the pen decision right and the AR's got all the offside calls right. I'd say he lacks the authority of some of the other elite refs, but that isn't to say he doesn't have the ability.

We lost tonight due to complacency and that's surprising for a Pep team. I've seen poor performances under Pep but never complacency. Looks like the title is going to Merseyside.

In Rafa we trust!

Good YC for me. Not mandatory. But appropriate given the clear instruction, goal and potential for drama.

I think it was because of the drama that he wuickly got out the lemon to show to everyone that he gave a clear instruction. All the commentators and pundits started spouting nonsense and completely misread the situation, and then as RR pointed out, once Phil Dowd explained what had happened he was completely ignored and the commentators continued spouting nonsense.

As a City fan last night was as bad as it gets. Not because we lost (most city fans over a certain age are rather used to losing!) but because we were slow, lethargic and generally poor. Theresa myth about City and Pep that it's tika taka and possession for the sake of it, which is nonsense. Nobody attacks more than city, even when we are winning comfortably. But last night we were just passing the ball around for the sake of it and no one was getting into the box. I think Arsenal may be on the end of a thumping at the weekend from us after Pep has ripped into the players. Newcastle deserved the win but they are a poor side without Diame and Shelvey in all honesty. Couldn't string a pass together in midfield at all. Fortunately for the Toon, Robson was brilliant under the high ball and his hold up play was sensational. Signs of the Rondon that the world's top clubs were looking at 10 years ago. He was class

As for Phil Dowd, monotone is too exciting a word. Come on man put a bit of emphasis on what you're saying. He's almost an after thought. Same with Chris Foy. They hardly get air time, maybe 5 seconds after a KMI but if they showed a bit of personality, or even a bit more character, then surely they'd be used more. They sound more like Bert Millichip doing the FA cup draw in the 80s!
