The Ref Stop
They're putting a defibrillator up at one of the council pitches. Apparently we can apply for training on how to use it. I'm steering well clear of that though. :O

"The player was not breathing when I got to him and I had to open his mouth, pull his tongue out before getting him breathing again."

Fingers in mouth of an unconscious casualty? Seems he didn't, in fact, know what to do.
Also, a defib would not have been any help.

Well if the player is choking on his tongue you need to clear his air way, or give him a tracheotomy. I know which one id rather do.

First aid at work training and similar things are all good, but sometimes you just need to do what needs to be done, even if it isn’t exactly as taught on your course.

I guess that this also answers the question about what you would do if a player in your match suffers a serious medical condition.

Ive heard people say, on here and else where, that they would never render medical assistance. Which to a degree is understandable, but if I had something like this in one of my games I’d probably help out if required

I know what you're saying, but it's a bloody big tongue that still blocks an airway after a simple head tilt.
If that failed then yeah, most people are going to take the risk and get in there

AED's are specifically designed so that you don't need training. Simply open it up and follow the loud voice instructions. Having said that, it does seem that a lot of people don't realise that you don't need training - perhaps everyone should be trained that they don't need to be trained!

Swallowed tongue is a misnomer. When unconscious, the tongue will slump towards the back of the throat blocking the airway. Solution is to get the patient into the recovery position to naturally open the airway

I coulnd't believ how idiot proof they were.
But, like most people, no way would I have been confident to attempt to use it before the course. It looks complicated when it's easier than a toaster

Ah, I can't hear the damn things. :P

I agree - that's why it would be a useful campaign to get that message out. Before I had my training on an emergency aid course to keep my coaching badge, I thought they were only to be used by qualified staff. You see them at train stations etc not knowing they are there for anyone to use.

I've done emergency aid courses a couple of times, and the whole swallowed tongue thing is a bit of a myth. As deusex says putting them in the recovery position should cause the tongue to move forward and unblock the airway, but I guess if that didn't work you'd then check the airway and move the tongue if necessary.

It wasn't @deusex that said that, it was @Big Cat. @deusex said to use the head tilt manoeuvre, which is what I was taught in my last company-sponsored first aid course a few years ago and as far as we were told, is the recommended medical practice. See link below for confirmation.

How to clear a person's airway

Incidentally, on that same web page, it says that the person should only be placed in the recovery position once they've started breathing (and if there's no suspected spinal injury).

The good news Sir is that we’ve cleared your airway and put you in the recovery position... The bad news is that you’ll never play football again!
