There is a persistent and prevalent myth out there that handling by the GK outside the PA is automatically a red card. (Just imagine--we'd have to send off the GK who accidentally caries the ball past the line while punting . . . .)Covering defenders aren't the key consideration, rather that is where the closest attackers are. Over the years I've seen a lot of referees incorrectly send off for handling outside the area, but it should only be red if it denies an OGSO. It would only be a yellow if the handling prevented a promising attack.
