I’m always looking to improve so would like some advice as I’m not sure how to do this better.

I’m single ref with no assistance.
Tackle from defender comes in and is clean, but ball bounces to another attacker who is clean through on goal. My attention immediately goes there as the keeper is charging out.
That ended with a goal kick, but apparently there was a collision with a second defender at the original tackle taking out the attacker.

I couldn’t see it and couldn’t make a call. I mean I would have played advantage anyway, but would possible have handed a sanction.
The attacking team were furious, I settled them down and explained. They understood and were actually quite supportive.

I try and always look a little longer after the ball has left in order to catch late tackles, but this was way after and I had to look at another potential incident.

So I hope that’s clear and my question is, how can I do better? What advice have you got?

More seriously, there is only so much we can see a sole ref. You said you watched for “afters” but not long enough. Possibly widen your view for more time for that. And possibly increase your awareness of what is happening so you can predict that second event may happen so you can linger your attention. But ultimately we also have to accept the limitations of one person trying to watch 22.

Sounds like you handled it well.

I often find honesty if the best policy - ‘I’ll be honest with you I just didn’t see it’

Obviously use this with caution but I do try to use this as a tactic to build relationships with players on the pitch.

Which is exactly what I did. It worked this time, but in a higher edged game it might not work as well.

I really enjoyed the match though. Overall it was played in great spirit. Every decision I made was accepted. I felt that I kept control well and tha wss probably as a consequence of being consistent with my decisions.

Drink some radioactive goop in the hope you grow eyes in the back of your head? In all honesty, as long as you’re looking in the area where there is most likely to be a serious incident, not much else you can do.
