Completed the BRC this weekend at CFA HQ where there are a good 10 or so pitches out back, so naturally there was a lot of time spent on the pitches doing the practical bits.

As we walk out the second time on the Saturday morning past reems of pitches the last pitch we walk past has U9 girls on, refereed by a young timid looking lad.

He blows for half time in his game and our tutor says hi and has a quick conversation with him.As we continue walking the tutor turns to us and says 'that's Ben, he's 14 and was on my course a few weeks ago and this is one of his first games. He's doing really well, I'm pleased with him."

Anyway, off we trot, do our session and walk back past the same pitch where Ben has started the second half and has just blown offside. He calls it, the girls all accept and he starts to position the free kick. Then the defending teams coach starts giving it large.

He wasn't abusive or offensive to be fair and the language was not an issue, but he went on and on and on and on.

Our tutor having heard this coach goes steaming over (and he's a big unit), asks what the issue is and when the coach replies 'he doesn't know the offside rule' explains that he quite categorically does as he taught him the LOTG and can vouch for his knowledge, as well as dropping in he did particularly well in his BRC exam.

After asking the coaches' refereeing qualifications (unsurprisingly none) he then asked if he knew how old Ben was.No replied the coach, to which the tutor smiles.

As the tutor walks off to let them continue the game he stops, turns back and says to the coach 'so you're currently abusing a child on the pitch, who's a third of your age, has a better knowledge of the LOTG and is more qualified than you.Well Done.'

Cue rapturous laughter from all speccys, coaches, us, players etc and a beetroot red coach.

Karma is a dish best served cold.

Strange that they are playing offsides at U9's, was it 11 a side or mini soccer?

No idea of the specifics Haywain, think the important thing is the coach learnt a valuable lesson and may think twice next time.

Regal, how about the valuable lesson that there is no offside for u9's, 7 v 7, who learnt that one?

Perhaps whoever wrote the county rules this season.

The offside was given, the players accepted it, the coach accepted it was part of the game but thought the decision was wrong.

We walked past a game of young girls as part of our own activities. We neither counted the players nor asked their ages, just accepted it for what it was.

No offside for u9's in 7 v 7 is an F.A. ruling

Assuming that it was u9, which you now seem to be doubting, and 7 v 7 which, given the fact that it took place at Cheshire F.A. HQ, is, I would imagine, a fairly safe bet, then the point I am making is that your tutor was wrong on two counts. Firstly in his understanding of the fact that the offside law doesn't apply in the game that you witnessed and secondly in the way in which he reportedly dealt with the situation witnessed by you

Haywain I have no idea if it was definitely u9, that was what was mentioned at the time, and I have to say I really don't care if it was or wasn't, if offside should have been played or not or if the tutor was right or not.

When I say 'walked past the game' I mean exactly that, we paid attention to the public humiliation the coach got for his unacceptable behaviour towards a young referee and nothing else. For me the rest is irrelevant.
