Sin Bin time

In a recent game, I issued a player a 10-minute sin bin for dissent, which was not an issue. While the player was in the sin bin, there were numerous stoppages in play and the ball was frequently out of play. The manager accused me of making up rules by pausing my watch during these instances, suggesting that I was adding time to his player's sin bin period.

Can you confirm if I was correct in stopping the watch for the sin bin when the ball was out of play and during any stoppages in play?

Correct.
  • The temporary dismissal period begins when play restarts after the player has left the field of play
  • The referee should include in the temporary dismissal period any time ‘lost’ for a stoppage for which ‘additional time’ will be allowed at the end of the half (e.g. substitution, injury etc...)

Not quite.

OP suggests they stopped the watcher every time it went out of play. As per the extract the sin bin is only extended where time is lost that will be added at the end of the game e.g. injuries, goal celebrations, time.wasting,.etc.

Thanks James,

The time lost was also added at end of 90mins. Which is how I understood it. I just wish Mangers would read the laws before accusing the referee of making up as they go along.

Do you ordinarily stop the watch when it is out of play?
Football doesn't work on a stop clock basis so time is allowed to countdown, including the sin bin, for ball out of play.

We only need to make allowance for time lost for the below events:

Agree, the only exception to this at grassroots but would it comes under time-wasting is when a player is taking long time to Retrieve a ball that gone out of play, otherwise my watch is still running.

Ok. I am only labouring that point as your OP suggested you were stopping it every time it went out of play.
