How long does a DBS last?

Hello,
Need to find out how long a DBS lasts as the league that I'm looking to referee for wants to know when mine expires.
Is there a way to see the date it expires? How long does it last?
Thank you,
Albert.

Sign in to Fa whole game, then look at “my account”, then safeguarding. Your DBS details should be on there.

Technically speaking they have no expiry date, they just have an issue date. They are out of date the day they are printed in reality as you could have offended since then. The FA ask for it to be renewed every 3 years. Only exception is if you have subscribed to the DBS update service then if never needs to be renewed.

Oh alright, thank you.

The FA do not accept the DB update service. They says it's not compatible with their protocols.
Isn't it an organisation that has to subscribe to the DBS update service? In which case every referee would have to pay the £13 a year to be renewed, assuming the FA / CFA couldn't / wouldn't absorb the cost?

I believe it's free to access results of a DBS check for an employer.

Employers and other organisations

To check a DBS certificate status online, you must:

You do not need to pay or register to carry out a status check. You can see the results from the check straight away.

Read the detailed guidance for employers.

Kentref, your information is wrong.

I am subscribed to the dbs update service through my job. This is child workforce and is enhanced. I had to fill in an Fa form, take it to the post office to verify my id, show them my dbs certificate and pay £5. That was 8 years ago. They accepted the dbs and just check it online every year. It doesn’t cost them anything and I don’t need a new one. It costs me £13 a year subscription.

The update service was brought in to stop all the many and costly dbs checks people were having. An organisation cannot refuse or opt out of using someone’s subscribed check as long as the certificate is for child workforce and it is enhanced.

An organisation registers in order to carry out online checks but an organisation cannot subscribe to the update service, only individuals can

This is interesting.

When my FA DBS expires next year i am going to try this tactic. It will save me some money.

As far as I know, you can't add an existing DBS to the scheme, it can only be added within a very short time frame after the original application. So a new application will be required, complete with verification. After that you can give your ID number and the organisation does the annual search. Just had mine roll over for work.

I've been with the update service for over 10 years - £13 a year.

Are you saying Brian you don't think i will ever be able to get the FA to use this as my DBS?

I think it may be role related and your rollover DBS, even though enhanced, may not be accepted by the FA. I remember school not taking my enhanced DBS because it was for refereeing and not teaching. It might work the other way around. There may be a special application offered by the DBS which allows you to do that. Check with them (DBS) to see if they can give you details..
