I'm gonna get in early.
And I'm gonna miss the match as I have a match to whistle and a video review that will go to midnight.
Here's hoping for a good show from the 3rd team all round!

It's like football writes these things. Of course a deliberate blocking play results in a big goal against Liverpool!

Replay from a different angle showed that it was actually Mac Allister holding and pulling the Man City player. Nothing at all wrong with that goal in my opinion.

Penalty shout at the end is a tough one. He's played the ball and then followed through to make contact with the attacker's chest, but without any real force. One of those that if Oliver had given it there's no way VAR would overturn, and I don't think it can really be called a clear and obvious error.

I'd sympathise with that stance if we're discussing red card or not. But when the question is foul or not, it's really obvious.

The pulling was clearly after he was pushed away from goal. Why would he pull a Man City player to the 6 yard box?

Exactly my thoughts on the decision.

First goal is completely fine. The pen is in my opinion a pen, but certainly not a clear and obvious one, not enough force.

Also a foul from Liverpool on Haaland in the build up to the corner the potential pen came from that wasn’t given, so it’s swings and roundabouts.

If it was given as a red card I don't think VAR would have overturned it. Not giving a foul altogether is surely a C&O error.

It's seems that PGMOL is prioritising "minimum interference" much higher over "maximum benefit" for penalties. I have seen a few other obvious penalties not reviewed this year.
 
New here. I really enjoy the discussions and thanks for helping me be a better ref.

It does seem like the pendulum has swung from the "rereferreeing", that was constant at VAR's introduction, which was awarding very soft penalties, especially around handballs, to now being very hands off if the CR was viewing the incident.

I would like the discussion to go something like, "Michael, on a scale of 1-10, how clear was your line of sight and how confident are you in your call? If it's below a 7, have a look at the monitor."
 
Oliver probably can't see the contact. Can it be reviewed as a serious missed incident? Clear and obvious criteria wouldn't apply.

I was just thinking that, surely he can say to var, I didnt see the challenge so its a different criteria from clear and obvious that your checking it to
 
...and then you have pundits like Shay Given saying last night, that because he touched a fraction of the ball first it's ok.

We've seen many red cards given for tackles that have got the ball first but the type of tackle endangered the opponent !
