Grassroots Referee
I went to watch a local district league final this week as an aspiring referee I wanted to see how the referee reacted with a larger crowd and a full support team etc.
During the game a couple of slightly reckless challenges were made and play was allowed to carry on. After team A had a player appear to make another reckless challenges, his captain spoke to the referee and was sinbinned, i managed to speak to the referee after the game and he said “the captain said it was getting dangerous with the challenges being allowed to happen and player safety was becoming an issue” so I sent him to the sin bin for questioning me on player safety.

As a new ref I just wondered if this was the right thing to do as there’s something about it that just doesn’t sit right with me about it. Assuming the ref was honest, surely if the captain wasn’t rude and just saying he thought it was becoming dangerous it wouldn’t be enough for a sin bin?

If the words you typed were verbatim (or thereabouts) the words that were said, and they were said in a non-aggressive, reasonable manner, that is never a YC sin-bin for dissent.

If he added “you don’t know what you’re doing” or words to that effect, or approached the referee aggressively, even if it’s a safety concern, I’m afraid that would be dissent.

The ref never said anything untoward was said other than he questioned his safety handling. From the side it didn’t look aggressive hence why I asked him after the match

I think you know the answer to the question yourself. The comment "During the game a couple of slightly reckless challenges were made and play was allowed to carry on" concerns me. From how it's described, if the ref had dealt with these in the first place, the captain wouldn't have been concerned about the safety of the players. Sounds like the ref that has lost control, and has taken out his frustration on anyone that dared point this out, which just adds to player frustration.

I am very skeptical that the OP is an accurate version of events (the whole teuch and nothing but the teuth etc). I find it very unlikely that an appointed league final referee not being able to handle a captain's 'calm' approach regarding the captains 'safety concerns'.

'You are having a poor day' and 'you are a sh!t ref' both say the same thing but only one of them gets a sin bin from me, even if said calmly.

I completely agree (apart from the various spellings of 'truth' ;)). As always, there is probably more to this than meets the eye.

I also dislike the 'referee has lost control' rather than the 'players have lost control'. At the very least it must be both!

I've been there. This is also a YHTBT.

When everyone gets on your back and the skipper starts pilling on with every other player after every challenge. Then someone starts mentioning player safety to you.

Absolutely questioning publicly your ability to manage the game and the goal is to make you look weak and unfit to be there.

Skipper is playing with fire.

On the side of the pitch it is hard to see all the dissent. Especially the persistent dissent.
