So, I’m refereeing a great cup tie, competitive, but not fractious, 2 mins to go, blues break into red’s penalty area, red commit a foul - no doubt in my mind, penalty! Sharp blow on the whistle, point to the spot. I’m in a great (and v credible) position to make the call (and it is a penalty)
Cue complaints from reds, understandably, but I waive them away. However, they are not happy, captain wants to talk, I agree, walk to the other side of the box and start to explain my reasoning. Another red comes over and shouts “that’s disgusting “ - he gets shown a yellow card and set to the bin. The temperature is rising rapidly, not helped by a lot of very vociferous mates of reds behind the goal - and behind the respect barrier. Unbeknownst to me, whilst I’m dishing out the yellow card, a red player is scuffing up the penalty spot - this angers blues. The temperature rises further! (Note to self: think about positioning in such circumstances in the future. But, in my defence, the game had gone from benign to boiling in moments, no NARs to help)
Anyway finally, get some semblance of order, get ball spotted on penalty spot, order all players out of the box. “Fans”/ friends behind goal still making a lot of noise, but the players on the pitch are my responsibility and we are ready for the penalty.
“Bury it blues” I’m saying in my head. Then will have the restart, as soon as the ball is in a safe position I’m blowing for full time, job done.
I blow my whistle for the penalty, and the keeper pulls off a fantastic save. Ball ricochets back to the penalty spot :” finish it” I am silently shouting, but he blasts it to near the keeper, who pulls off a second wonder save. Goalmouth scramble, until reds clear it, for an attacking throw near the corner flag.
Cue more drama: blue 4 squares up to a red, and starts shoving him, saying he took the mick out of the penalty taker who missed. Blue captain is complaining a red shouted when the penalty was being taken. Temperature rising even higher, if that’s possible. A few, long shrill whistles from me, send everyone one away - the brewing mass conf. fizzles out. I call blue 4 over, he’s calmed down and accepts his yellow card for AA.
What I’d like your help with is this.
I think a red did shout out as the penalty was taken, although not 100% sure because of the noise from behind the goal, and my focus on penalty taker & keeper. But assume he did (and I was sure he did): Obviously if penalty goes in, not a problem. But it didn’t. I definitely didn’t have time to process or blow the whistle when the rebound came in, and then I was focused on the goal mouth scramble - anything could have happened here.
Should I have then gone back and ordered the kick be retaken? Had I been quick enough, I could have blown for a retake after the penalty was saved, but it all happened so quick and I really did think he would score the rebound. If I’m honest, it wasn’t until the ball went out of play, and I’d defused the developing mass conf, that I was able to process that red had (probably) shouted as the penalty was being taken
And to make matters worse: I’m now thinking let’s blow for full time as soon as the ball is in a safe position, let everything calm down, before extra time. As it was an attacking throw for blue, I had to let this happen. But …
From the ensuing throw, reds clear and it breaks for them. OK, I’m now thinking, as reds go on a counterattack, this is either going to end as a goal kick, a defensive throw for blue, or with the blue defenders or keeper: I’ll blow then. But no, it goes for a red corner. Now I’m thinking, OK, they’ve not looked like scoring all game, so no worries. Harmless Corner comes in, blue defender swings a leg, and shanks the ball over his keeper: own goal.
(And no one, other than me, will remember that sixty minutes earlier, reds scored their first goal after I played an advantage!)
Any thoughts?!
