    Club marks

Yes, I guess that makes sense!

    Club marks

Have you asked your league for your club marks to check specifically which games let you down?

Was I too harsh? Or maybe even too lenient?

Yep, I became a much better referee when I became more relaxed about using my cards.

    Promotion 17/18

Depends what games you're getting on the SAL. If you're getting the senior division games then I've found them much higher quality than the Sunday league I do, but the quality falls off quite sharply after that. But I definitely agree with Brian. Sunday league is certainly not easy street!

I don't see it as 'rushing' to do the double jump. The FA system allows you to do it, and it's been recommended by lots of people.

    Match recorders

I use these. I use them inside a wallet, but they're thick enough to use without one if you choose. Has goals, match details and subs on one side, then cautions and dismissals on the other. As it only sits in one half of the wallet it's easy to flip over during the game...

    Ross County vs Celtic

Plenty of examples of a 4th official giving a penalty that the referee and ARs haven't given? Really? Can you point me to one, as I don't remember ever seeing it. It's only within their remit if the referee makes it within their remit, and I'm never in a million years asking a 4th official to...

    Not much to say her...

But so much about refereeing nowadays is man management. Your cards are an important tool for managing players, but a card so casually flashed to a player mid-tirade is a total waste of that tool. The player doesn't even look up to see what colour the card is, so it clearly has no effect on him...

    Junior/Youth Appeal The Appeal?

Glad it all worked out for you with the appeal, but thought this was worth commenting on. I obviously wasn't there so can't judge the incident, but it being his first tackle isn't a reason not to caution. If you don't caution a player because 'it's his first one' then that gives license to the...

    Indirect free kick signal

Given this is posted in the forum for ARs and 4th officials, I took this to mean how would an AR flag for an indirect free kick. The answer is I don't think there is a specific one. You'd have to flag for a foul as normal, and then verbally communicate that the offence you spotted would be an...

    Defensive FK

Agree the kick should have been retaken, but the keeper can take it from wherever he wants within the goal area, doesn't have to be in line with where the offence occurred.

    Promotion 17/18

Third observation on Saturday went great, so that's the three for 7-6 all done with no issues. Now just need to make sure I get enough games so I can get onto 6-5 from October!

    Club marks

Yeah, London basically told us they don't really matter either from 7-5. If you do enough games, and pass enough observations then you'll be fine. They still collect them as they have to confirm you did the games you said you did but it sounds like they basically ignore them when it comes to...

    Club marks

Really sorry to hear that Craig, I think it's nonsense to miss out on promotion because of club marks, especially as you passed the observations!

    Dissent

Afraid not IMO. For something that is so clearly offensive and insulting, delivered directly to an opposition player after you've already called them over to speak to them, it's a red card.

Hard pitches - Summer v Winter

A frozen pitch is going to be slippy, and the surface is more likely to be uneven as it will have been churned up and then frozen that way. Generally in summer it's flat, baked surfaces where there is still plenty of grip, so far less danger of slipping around or twisting a knee in a rut.

Change to Observer report writing Level 4

For the uninitiated among us can someone just explain how the marks translate into the bandings (assume its the same below standard, standard expected etc), and also what you mark you have to average over the course of a season?

    Booking for Dissent

Agree with all the above, except at that age I think it'd be more appropriate to use the manager than the captain as part of the stepped approach. They're far more likely to be able to exercise the control you need than someone who is probably only the skipper because they're the best player on...

    Everton v Leicester

Yeah, he very clearly waited until the ball was in the net before he signalled for an advantage.

Fouled player can be booked for exaggeration/simulation?

Technical possible I guess, but not sure why you would. "How is it a yellow if I've been fouled?" "You're exaggerating the injury" "I was fouled, it hurt. How do you know where it hurt, are you psychic? " "Ref, if you've booked him for diving how can it be a foul?" "It's for exaggerating the...
