    Shouting/Appealing

I had one girl call for handball three separate times. On the third I called out: "not deliberate, hands in natural position". She then said "Sorry ref, you don't mind me appealing though?" I replied "As long as you don't mind me ignoring it". No problems. So many player appeals are neither...

    Fulham Brighton offside

Just went and watched the video for this. It is exactly as the still shows: the Brighton player on the ball is just touching it through for a team mate who is yards offside. The move led to a goal kick...and no flag at all. An astonishing decision.

    Defensive handling and OS

I think people on this site are unduly harsh of IFAB. True, they may have problems with wording Laws....but look at the national Government: teams of lawyers, private secretaries and clerks all work at drafting laws that end up having myriad loopholes and mistakes. And yet we expect a bunch...

Not paid for pre season game

No, all they need is a simple rule: pay for the game BEFORE it starts. Thats what we do in Australia....never had a single problem.

    Open Age Own goal celebration

This happened in my game last week. Ladies Open Age game, one team were well behind in match when one of their players scored an own goal (not intentionally, attempted to clear but scored). I would guess that this player rarely scored, because after a moment's shock she let out a roar, took...

    The Heat

Here in Western Australia we have the policy that 34 deg at KO means drink breaks and 36 deg the game is rescheduled. This is for adults: for junior games knock 4 deg off these figures. I should point out that high humidity can be the real killer. I recall from my days in the UK how sweaty...

Refereeing a Team within your Own Football Club

After I had refereed a game I had changed and was standing on the sideline watching the start of another match. Before kick off the ref was chatting with one of the goalkeepers, clearly they were pretty good friends. As the game started, in the very first minute one team had a breakaway attack...

    Law 12

I agree the phrasing of the Law is unclear. I therefore emailed IFAB for a clarification. The answer I got back was that PIADM is about an action that "threatens injury to someone (including the player themself)" and IFAB stated that the next bit, about including preventing an opponent from...

    Law 12

I am a little baffled by the way everyone is not answering the questions the OP asked. And so many people getting tied up in knots over a Law that seems crystal clear. 1 OP asked how a physical offence against a TEAM-MATE can be an indirect free kick. It can't. There isn't really any IFK...

    Restart position after offside?

Actually the Law is solid, it is the referees who fail to enforce it who are a bit daft.

    Penalty kick toss

Problem with the sun is that often if it's in GK's eyes, if you swap ends it will be in the eyes of the kick takers

    DOGSO handball (goal not denied)

I was always taught "the only advantage in Penalty Area is a goal" So I would add to your statement "hits an unmissable goal over the bar....yellow and a penalty"

    Handball

It's interesting to me just how much the Handball law has gone in a big circle: Pre 2019: Players constantly appealed for handballs which I turned down because they were 'not deliberate". 2019 - 2021 No-one really had a clue exactly what constituted Handball...except me (and not always...

    What fine to issue

And guys, we should all be aware that "Foul and abusive language" was taken out of the Laws 25 years ago. It is "offensive, insulting or abusive language and/or actions" (OFFINABUS). It's a bit much to criticize the poster for not knowing the list of offenses and then use wrong terminology...

Should I have given a penalty?

This doesn't sound like a relaxed assured attempt at goal. If we use the "two bites of the cherry" rationalization then we are really encouraging defenders to commit fouls. If we use the "well he didn't go down" rationalization, we are encouraging forwards to dive. It's simple: was the...

    Palace V Liverpool

Not correct. Yes, certainly, in general a defender cannot claim that their decision making was affected by a PIOP. But we are now discussing not just being there, but actually interfering. There are four definitions of interfering in the Laws: two of them are not relevant here (line of vision...

    Offside

Or more accurately, we throw the snapshot away if play is stopped but if the defense plays the ball we take a new snapshot but of the other team.

    Palace V Liverpool

Not quite correct: that would be true if we were considering the PIOP only making an "obvious action" however an attempt to play a ball that is close merely has to "impact ...on an opponent", and arguably that happened here.

    Standing on the ball

I don't see a problem with the laws, the problem is with referees who fail to enforce them. In this case, if a player stands on ball, come straight across and give a yellow for Delaying the restart. If all refs did this then the tactic would die out overnight.

    West Ham v Leeds

Watching the video closely, it does appear that the Leeds defender very possibly touched the ball last in his tackle, and since a tackle is clearly a deliberate attempt to get the ball it cannot be ruled as a deflection and therefore offside is ruled out. This must have been the call, since...
