IFAB confusing communication on deliberate handball inside the penalty area

Thanks James. I understand the change ref non-deliberate, but the attached seems to confirm; - any deliberate handball in the penalty area results in a red card, AND; - deliberate handball, if it isn’t SPA or DOGSO, no caution It can’t be both.

IFAB confusing communication on deliberate handball inside the penalty area

Hi All, I am our club’s ref co-ordinator and having been running a ‘laws of the game’ quiz/fun facts post. Today, I found this. But this evening I found this which aligns with my understanding: So, which is correct ? Thx, James

Interesting one today - handball ?

Thanks and I agree, so rarely give a handball offence unless it is clearly deliberate or the body shape is clearly and obviously unnaturally bigger. Players always call for a decision every time the ball touches a hand but I have a pretty high bar. However, sometimes your inner instinct...

Interesting one today - handball ?

Thanks folks. I’m not suggesting that defenders need to make the body smaller, I’m just pointing out the arm movement wasn’t away from the ball. Natural position is always difficult to assess. The player was standing still and the arms were clearly away from the body, then they moved as the...

Interesting one today - handball ?

Had a interesting one today. Green team attacking and win a corner. Corner comes in and purple defender, who has arms by their side, moves arms slightly away from the body as ball reaches them. The ball hits an arm and deflects away from the strikers in the goal area. In my opinion, the...

    12 players on the pitch

Thanks All, so I largely got it the decision right but could have avoided the situation which I fully accept. I’ve only completed 14 games since qualifying so every game is a learning opportunity (even if this learning is by bitter experience). During my ref’s course we didn’t really cover...

    12 players on the pitch

Hi All, I had a bizarre incident on Sunday. At a GK, the home team calls to make a substitution and immediately the away team does too. No problem. As there were multiple players entering and leaving the field of play, I checked with both coaches that they had completed their substitutions...

    Back pass

There were loads of appeals from the attacking team. I also explained that the pass doesn’t need to be backwards (it was sideways) and that there is actually no actual back pass rule, but this fell on deaf ears.

    Back pass

More great feedback - thank you. gvu-ref - the defender played the ball with his foot. I was sure of the decision at the time, and am only seeking other viewpoints because of the reaction. I definitely get the ‘turn a blind eye or ‘I didn’t hear/see it’ approach’, but also want to be...

    Back pass

Hi Guys, Thanks for the feedback. I also took into consideration proximity and the pace of the ball. All the pace came off the ball, the goalkeeper was in close proximity to the incident and the ball moved in his direction. ‘Deliberate’ is very hard to determine and often so subjective...

    Back pass

Hi All, A little advice please. i ref’ed a fairly bad tempered U15 game today. In the second half, a player from the home team touched the ball within his goal area. There was no opposition player close by. The ball travelled about 2 metres from the player and the goal keeper picked the...
