    Clear DOGSO

At that age, I'd show appreciation for the other manager's generous approach but say "Sorry, no option" and send off the player. A note to the authority handling the case should result in leniency, hopefully.

    8 seconds not being enforced

In my first 16 games as an Observer, it has been penalised twice. First was a 5>4 candidate, who reminded the goalkeepers before the game and penalised an offence after 2 minutes. Second was a Level 3. Two months in, so no need to brief the keepers. Clear and loud verbal count, plus the hand...

    Send off before kick off

A competition rules thing - which varies in nearly every competition where I am an Observer 😒

    Sin bins and half time...

Law 5 seems clear: "has the power to show yellow or red cards and, where competition rules permit, temporarily dismiss a player, from entering the field of play at the start of the match until after the match has ended, including during the half-time interval, extra time and penalties (penalty...

    reckless behavior

Depends how quickly the physio completes their work. If they don't delay the restart by more than 20-25 seconds, the injured player can stay on the field of play.

    Promotions period

If you are still a 7 or 6, there are usually three opportunities per season to move to the next level. Details will be on the County FA website.

    Brentford v Manchester City

I just checked with the FA - Observers are not allowed to die currently, as we are short of Observers nationally. Sorry😕

Women's FA Cup - sin bins?

The FA Community states: Where are temporary dismissals used? Step 5 and below in the Men’s football pyramid and Tier 3 and below in the Women’s football pyramid. It is also used in all cup competitions in leagues at grassroots levels and all County cup competitions where there are no teams...

    Three penalties missed

On the subject of commentators, I was driving home from carrying out an observation on Wednesday, listening to the latter stages of the Manchester City game on the usually sensible Radio Five. The referee was asked to visit the screen for a possible penalty. The City goalkeeper was then...

Observation marks: what counts as avarage-good-very good?

The average set by The FA is only for referees seeking to go 5>4, and is currently 71.5. Previously it was 71.0.

Player asking if his keeper can pick up the ball from a potential backpass

As the OP indicates that the ball was played by the player's shin, there is no offence here, but if asked the question by the goalkeeper a call of (e. g.) "Not a back pass" is perfectly permissible in youth or adult football.

Observation marks: what counts as avarage-good-very good?

Hi, David When going from 5 to 4, you need to achieve an average of 71.5 or higher in your (usually 4) observations. Those that get 71.5 or higher are submitted to The FA for consideration. At that point in the process The FA will consider all the candidates' marks, but will also take into...

Penalty given, second yellow card not given and I do not understand why

Caution for DOGSO if the challenge is an attempt to play the ball, dismissal for DOGSO if not an attempt to play the ball. Suggest you read through Law 12 (on the IFAB or FA websites) to ensure that you have a full understanding. Well done for asking.
