    Here we go again....

Waterlogged pitch for my morning game today. Here’s hoping better afternoon!

    Back to it....

Annoyingly, away side pulled out of my fixture today at 12 noon, citing lack of players. Free afternoon for me as a result. Tomorrow’s game might be off too, as home side’s 1st team played on pitch today and subject to pitch inspection in the morning.

    Back to it....

Assisted on a Supply League game today. Two games in the middle tomorrow. Quarter-Final of County FA Youth Cup in the morning then a nice 30 mile drive to game 2. At I’ve gog least Assistants on the latter one!

    Back to it....

Yesterday’s game a 3-0 romp for the home team in a league game with very little to do. This morning OA County Cup QF, edgy, niggly game 1-1 in normal time. 5-3 win for the away team on pens. 4 cautions including one who ran at me from 30 yards to mouth off and then seemed genuinely surprised...

    Abuse towards referees.

We both agree we can’t get consistency so the existing process won’t, and isn’t working. I also agree if we stood up and fired out cards left, right and centre, it would be us under scrutiny rather than the dissent itself Sitting in our beds and lying in it isn’t going to stop hundreds of...

    Abuse towards referees.

I never said I hadn’t dealt with any dissent using the tools available to me as an official, but yes, I’m honest enough to admit there are times I wish I had acted differently in certain games. I can say like most referees that I wouldn’t have learnt and moved forward unless from such...

    Abuse towards referees.

It is a fine line but we do have options available to us. Personally, if the powers that be really want to see a behaviour change, IFAB should change Dissent and OFFINABUS to be direct free-kick offences. It might sharpen one or two minds to behave a little more, particularly so the...

    0-0

26 seasons in, and at just shy of 3,000 matches later, I can only remember having had 4 0-0 draws (I’ve only kept total games per season rather than the scores). Two of these were as referee and 2 as AR. Strangely the two I remember most were back to back games in mid-winter at Contrib level...

    Quick Free Kicks

The advantage of a quick free kick is to the attacking team not the defence. If the defending team don’t concede the foul no opportunity for a quick one. I normally ask the teams to ask me for a quick one when speak to the captains. If I don’t get asked then I take it they want a ceremonial...

    Red cards

Not had a single second caution yet this season or most of last. One of my local leagues operates Sin Bins. I’ve actually found a couple of sending offs have been for a reaction after player being sent there, normally a tirade of offensive Language which is worse than the dissent received...

A local derby in my local Supply League’s 2nd Division for me this Saturday after a fortnight in Cyprus sunning myself!
