The position on the pitch where the foul is committed does come in to play in terms of whether there is an advantage or not. Deep in the defensive third, it is probably MORE advantageous for defending team to have a free kick, than to have the ball at feet being challenged by a forward and trying to clear it.

I think that's true, but in the Premiership where a lot of teams score on the break, there can be an advantage just for keeping the ball at a time when the opposition are out of position. Not something I'd give on a cowfield in Herefordshire, but I can see why Howard might have done there.

Mind you, like the rest of you, I'd be going for my red pocket on that one...
