Who'd be a ref? Argentinian official shot dead by player he sent off.
One of the most mental and tragic stories you're likely to hear today has come out of Argentina where a referee has been brutally murdered by a player he sent off.

Argentina where a referee has been brutally murdered by a player he sent off. The incident happened in a match in the Cordoba district of the country during a non-league match. The player was shown his marching orders by the ref and in return, shot the official dead whilst also shooting another player, aged 25, in the chest. Tragically the ref, named locally as César Flores, a 48-year-old, succumbed to his injuries but the other player, Walter Zárate, was seriously injured but after being rushed to hospital is said to be out of danger.

According to the Mirror , the unnamed player, who is still at large, was shown red for flooring an opponent during the game. The paper continues to report the local police claim the man being sought for the fatal shooting had the gun in his backpack and ran onto the pitch as the game was continuing before he shot the referee three times, hitting him in the head, chest and neck. "It all happened during the match," said a police spokesman. "We don't know what happened with the referee but the player was angry and went to get his gun and killed him."

Shocking!

The Referee Store
Terrible story and a shocking waste of life.

One sentence: The lack of respect in football.

This is the inevitable end point of a game which makes excuses for those who do not know how to behave. Sooner or later this is where it ends up.

Sadly there is a distinct lack of respect these days in all walks of life, although football seems to take it to a whole new level!

One story where a referee is attacked is one too many, unfortunately youtube is full of football videos showing players & spectators losing the plot completely and sometimes these result in attacks on officials. In some ways football has evolved and improved with the times, better facilities for example, but sadly in other ways including at times player/spectator behaviour it's still very much in the dark ages, with the tragic and pointless death of an Argentinian referee being a prime example! :(

Absolutely shocking. All matches at every level should observe a minutes silence this weekend as a mark of respect for our colleague who was simply out doing what we all do every Saturday afternoon !
