Hello All,

I'm new to refereeing, having just passed my basic referee course. I was wondering about when you join a league, you are responsible for telling them when you're not available. I don't understand this as I thought you were in full control of when you organize matches.

Thanks in advance,

Callum Ward

you're not telling the league, you're telling central appointments at county, who effectively control the allocation of referees to each league, as i understand it

if you don't tell central appointments which dates you are unavailable for, they will make the assumption that you are available and may 'allocate' you to games

when you start saying sorry, can't do it, you'll get your fingers rapped, not literally.

you are in full control by telling central appointments which dates you are not available for, once a month usually. you can then add additional dates or remove existing one's on an on-going basis throughout the month, tho' not too often if you can help it.

bottom line, if you haven't closed out christmas day, your birthday, whatever, don't be surprised when you receive a fixture confirmation

o.k. you can be a little surprised if it's christmas day :)

p.s. forget what you may have read on another thread about me describing west sussex as 'god's own county'

i'm lancashire through and through but, when you live amongst the heathen southerners.......needs must :)

As said above, you don't really organise your own matches, you let the appointments officer know when you don't want him to 'organise' a game for you.

Procedure completely depends on the county - in my county, we have to let each league know individually when we are not available although in some other counties all appointments in all leagues within that area are controlled by the CFA.

Absolutely correct Owen, the procedure varies from County to County.

@Callum Ward if you contact Steve Stewart or James Mainwaring at your County FA they will be able to give you more advice. Closed dates are difficult. You just need to be a little bit organised. So if you know you are going on holiday, attending a party (and won't feel at your best the next day), taking an exam or anything else that means you won't be available to referee on a certain day, you tell the person who gives you games, that you are not available that day.

If things change and you are available, then tell them that as well. It's far better to go from being unavailable to available rather than the other way around.

Thanks. And also do you have to have the county badge sewed on because on my course they said it didn't matter but all other referees I've spoken to said you have to.

its courtesy to let county fa and the league you are attached to know when you are not available, yes county fa also like to see there badge on your shirt
