all went well, thanks
unfortunate lack of communication between referee and assistant in the game before mine, tho
boys u12's, goalmouth scramble, ball goes over the line and referee signals a goal.
linesman steps onto the pitch and raises flag
referee goes over to linesman, pulls up about ten yards away and has a very brief conversation before signalling the goal again
linesman remains on the pitch with his flag up and referee goes right up to him. another short discussion and a free kick is awarded to the defending side.
by this time team that thought they had scored had headed back to their own half, celebrating the goal. free kick was taken and subsequent play almost resulted in a goal at the other end which would have been even more embarrassing.
heard the story later and separately from both assistant and referee. ref went over and asked, from 10 yards away, 'did the ball cross the line?' to which the reply from the assistant was 'yes, it did'. ref then signalled the goal, without hearing the rest of that sentence which was, 'yes it did....but the goalkeeper was pushed over the line by the attacker at the same time'
there's a lesson in there, somewhere
