You can say it's a foul, that's fine.

But the referee saw it, didn't give it, which was consistent with how he was refereeing the game.
For VAR to call that is absurd.

And I’m yet to see a ref grow sum balls and over rule the VAR call.

They feel obliged to give it everytime.

What a mess.

VAR simply told the ref to look at it - ref made final decision, if he wanted to be 'consistent with how he was refereeing the game' - he would!

Yes but, the ref could still have said....no

So, he called it

Santa’s point was the ref saw it in real time & didn’t give it.

It was only after VAR pulled it up that he felt obliged to give it.

"Unless you are 100% certain, you don't give it" - Lawro

How many penalties would we see if they had to be 100% certain, he would go mental because they weren't giving a pen for what he thought was a stonewaller

Hmmm as Lawro just so eloquently explained...the psychological effect is that VAR is basically saying it's a pen, you need to guess again, look and give it... yes, the ref has a choice, but having been given the review, it's only natural that you are thinking "OK, 7 guys think it's a mistake... so er now it's a pen pen" ...only human

I agree when are we gonna see a ref stand his ground.

He’s given a penalty based on what his chums thousands of miles away think in a cabin stuffing doughnuts & coffee.

VAR is defo encouragement for players to play act & try to con the Referee.

As if they didn’t need encouraging already.

All VAR is doing is saying.....please look at again.

In this case, they are not saying yes or no

He feels obliged as his colleagues have pulled it up he doesn’t want to show them up.

Yet to see a ref look at the screen & disagree with his chums back at HQ.

I agree it's a factor. I'd rather that than the VAR actually making the decisions. At least if the referee is confident in his original decision, he can stick to his guns.

The reason we don't see many refs stick with their decisions is because technically speaking they are looking at a 'clear and obvious error' and if that is true, sticking to their original decision would only be upholding their mistake. (of course some of these 'errors' are not errors at all in reality)

Are they not saying.......are you sure you have not made an error, please look at this again?
They might "say" that but that's not the effect - especially on a weaker ref - with Ronaldo - golden boot... you are jogging over to the monitor and all the weight of expectation is "mistake, pen"... why would they recommend a review otherwise!

The only way it will ever be consistent is if you have the same pool of ex refs that VAR every game every week together.

Same group over a season means they should Atleast be consistently incorrect or correct.
