Kick off v choice of ends

Any of you historians know when the option to kick off was removed?

I'm sure long ago that there used to be the choice (That has just been re-introduced of course.)

And just in case you're interested, the provision for the winner of the toss to have a choice of either option was first introduced in 1873. In the original laws of 1863 there was no choice - winner got choice of ends, loser kicked off (just like the period from 1997 till 2019).
