I give you two basic ones 
It's not as easy as it looks. But it does get easier as you you do more games and get more experience.
Reading the laws of the game book is not because you want pass the exam, its because you want to make the correct decision in your games, so continue revising it after you pass your exam.

My advice: peruse the New Referee subforum, as it will have lots of advice to new referees. And always stay calm.
Watch a lot of other referees to see how to do it and how not to do it.

Wave the flag. The best way to learn faster is by assisting refs that are 1-2-3 leagues above you.

I think the best piece of advice is dont takes thing personally.
If a team loses you will most probably get the blame, dont get involved in long discussions with coaches-managers especially during the game, if they want to question something then explain yourself and move on.
Smile and be confident in what you do.
Dont over use the whistle.
I know you asked for one bit of advice but these few tips helped me a lot.

Refereeing is surprisingly simple. All you need to do is apply the laws of the game.
To do that you need to be able to do 2 things
1) know the laws of the game inside out, the simple things and the things that may occasionally happen are equally important
2) be fit enough to get yourself into the right position on the pitch - you may need to be able to bang out a 50 yard sprint 2 minutes from the end of the game, you need to be able to do that.
If you can do those 2 things, all of the rest will fall in to place, given time, experience and a few mistakes, but always focus on getting the basics right.

Be Calm, Confident and Cheerful. The latter is optional but 9/10 times it stands me in good stead!

Try and stay calm, even when dealing with the issuing of cards. When I first started refereeing, that was the thing I had most difficulty with was the staying calm in pressure situations
Prepare yourself well, and get into a pre match routine. ie cards go in left pocket, whistle in right pocket, check nets, check kits etc.
Get there early and look the part...cleanly shaven, kitted out properly, wide awake etc. They'll latch onto any sign of weakness.
As mentioned above, know the LOTG inside out, and stick to them. In a difficult situation you can always refer the player/manager to the LOTG (you can't if you didn't stick to them !). County FA's can't criticise you, if you kept to the laws !
Don't talk down to players and patronise them. Just be firm and confident and show your personality.

On the Dissent issue, I use the ATC method.
Ask
Tell
Card.
I find it dissent is dealt with early, it does not become an issue later in the game. Each new referee will develop his own methods for dealing with dissent

For me its 3 things
1. Smile...... if your smiling players never really have a come back to anything.
2. Talk..... To them as you would expect to be talked too.... professional and friendly always works
3. Don't..... Take things personally..... It will eat away at you but just learn and take it into your next game
4. Perception.... Always think whats the perception of me.... If your wandering around the pitch looking a little lost everyone will pick up on it... Be on your toes from minute one.... Be within 15 yards of a decision.... Be confident
5. Most of all enjoy it..... if your not enjoying it the 4 above will show....
Laws of the game as key but just keep reading & learning those....
