But if he is shouted at, then he shouldn't be! Because one of the keys to refereeing is adjusting your interventions to be in keeping with the temperature of the game ... raising your involvement when necessary and backing off when possible. So at 'higher temperatures', borderline careless fouls get whistled and borderline reckless fouls get cautioned.
Been praised by an observer once this season for NOT issuing a first caution for a borderline reckless challenge after 40 minutes of a placid game. He agreed that, IN THAT INSTANCE, a strong word sufficed ...
