Evening all, I have a couple of questions regarding player kit that I’d like your help with. I have looked through the good book, but can’t find anything definitive- if there is, it would be a great help.

  1. Snoods. I know snoods are banned, and a google search says they were banned in 2011, but are we just “to know” that they are considered dangerous and not permitted? (Unlike jewellery which is explicitly mentioned) Would be good to have something definitive I can point players/coaches to, from the authorities; all I can find is newspaper reports from 2011 saying they are banned.
  2. Shorts. The good book states that shorts are a mandatory piece of player equipment, but says no more. I had a player (U15) wearing his shorts halfway down his backside - his figure hugging under wear could be seen, basically although clothed in cloth, I could see his butt cheeks. I told him to pull up his shorts, and insisted he did up the draw string to keep them up. He complied. At the end of the game, he and some team mates asked (politely) if it “was the rules” that he couldn’t wear “saggies” ie have his shorts halfway down. I winged it a little and said yes! But the law book doesn’t explicitly say shorts must be pulled up. I think (if necessary in the future) I can justify this by saying shorts are mandatory, and the definition of shorts (as I have found on Wikipedia) is: “shorts are a garment worn over the pelvic area, circling the waist …”, so to be shorts, they must be pulled up.

Any thoughts, help, or guidance welcome.

1. I remember some clarifications being issued. I am fine with it not being in the laws specifically. Deal with it the same way as you would if a player wants to wear a cap with a hard edge. Simply explain why they are not safe.
2. His under wear could be seen you say. Check the laws for undershorts. There is nothing in law about bad taste. If I see this I'd manage it with light humor. Something tongue in cheek like seeing his butt crack distracts me from refereeing. Though your approach of using definition of shorts also sounds good. You also have the option of going down the safety or even offensiveness route but sometimes better left alone altogether. How would you deal with a player whose shirt is too short? 🤣
