I know the tape must be the base colour of the sock.

Law 4.2 - Socks – tape or any material applied or worn externally must be the same colour as that part of the sock it is applied to or covers.


I have noticed players cutting/buying pre cut socks and then wearing the grip socks. These socks are typically black or white and go half way up the shin.

Since the LOTG don't say anything about it, I assume play on.

Most referees where I observe advise their AR's to allow grip socks below the ankle bone only; anything higher is not acceptable.
The reference to socks in Law 4 is the club colour socks worn by all outfield players, so grip socks over those are unacceptable.
