The above was my esteemed colleagues take on it. If the keeper was kicking from hand she would penalise Benzima. So why not when keeper throwing from hand.

Am either or on it. I think I would penalize, easy option in grass roots. Safer.
But I can justify allowing it too

I would say the difference is that, when kicking, and the ball is thrown to then be kicked, the LOTG still deems the keeper in control of the ball.

I think you've just answered it there. If the keeper's kicking it from his hands and the attacker attempts to block then it could easily end up with contact/injury. By throwing/rolling it with Benzema 2 yards away there was no threat to player safety. Ultimately, Karius has simply got it wrong. Nobody else to blame; goal!

If I knew he had
What's the difference between that and this incident?

Because jumping up to block is clear and obvious this wasn’t clear and obvious this was a ball thrown in a players direction.

If a player went out of his way to jump and block the keeper it’s a simple blow of the whistle, if a player standing 3yrds away has a ball thrown in his direction & sticks out a leg then it’s a different story.

It has to be clear and obvious now? I thought it was the outcome, the effect on play, that was the issue?

The attacker saw the throw and started to move to block the intended path before the throw, by the way. So in both cases an attacker saw where the keeper was going to release it, started to move in that direction and went out of his way to block the ball.

But surely if an attacker jumps in front of the keeper, it's the keeper's fault for releasing it near an attacker? I mean, he's released it by the time it hits the striker's back, hasn't he?

Most blocks are done completely safely, usually by jumping in front of the release.

Like I said until a distance law is introduced you’ll always have this debate.

That was "our" analysis of it too. Take away any keeper in control or was the ball in play or did the attacker stick a leg out etc and give the gk 6 yards grace to get rid of the ball. If we are looking to clear up this kind of incident.

You are quite correct, there is now distance law for this.

However, for a throw in, an opposition must be 2m from the thrower. Just adding that to the mix.

(FWIW, at grassroots, I'm giving an idfk for this.)

Hi
From what I see it comes down to the difference between intercepting and preventing. From my take on it Benzema does not go towards the GK or the ball just parallel. I would say more an interception so no foul for me.
Anyway I do not see any major outcry that Liverpool was done an injustice here. Most see the action as a howler by Karius rather than an uncalled clear offence. Something that you would see in an indoor five a side game rather than a CL final
If this had been a clear foul there would have been media uproar including social media. Instead both goalkeeping incidents were seen by most as mistakes by Karius. Yeah a ref could call an offence here yet it would have caused a significant fuss. I think the only ones debating this is referees who might see some possible offence in it. Anyone that I spoke to never mentioned foul just Karius' mistakes. Benzema should not have got within an ass's roar of the ball here yet he is able to stick out a leg 2/3 yards away and score a goal!
If we ask the following questions
Did Benzema challenge the GK?
Did Benzema restrict the GKs movement?
Did he interfere with the release of the ball?
Was any of the action dangerous or pose any risk to the GK?
All no for me.
All I saw was that Benzema guessed the path of the ball, stuck out a leg some 2 yards away and the ball hit him.
This is a good argument put forward. The only issues is, we can use the same criteria for another case which can universally be accepted as an offence.

For example, lets say Karius saw Benzema throwing a leg in and held on to the ball, then turned and attempted to throw the ball in a different direction. Benzema seeing this moves and throws his leg forward in the path of the new direction. Karius seeing this tries a third attempt on yet a new direction and Benzema repeats an attempted 'intercept' all from one to two yards away. I doubt any referee will allow Benzema to continue doing this. Yet all his actions are within the same movement of this incodent.

You can’t if all the examples quoted you’ve answered No! We can all split hairs with this but I’m with the ‘what football expects’ camp...... and it’s a free kick to Man City

Hi
Why is the Law there. To prevent challenge and release of the ball by the GK. We all have plenty of situations where the attacker runs in front of the GK on a punt or jumps up in front of the GK to prevent a throw. We penalise those and in the One example it is a foul as Benzema is then closer and as part of his action he is trying to stop the throw which is a foul. That is not what happened here.
What those that are in favour of a no foul are saying is that the action has not prevented the goalkeeper from releasing the ball from the hands. The ball has been released and gone two yards plus. In fact Benzema never even went near the GK at any time

Im a firm believer of go with your gut instinct, the moment I saw it I thought keeper howler.

Nothing since has changed my mind.

Think of it like this (and it comes back to the distance point). If Benzema does what he did 10 yards away, that would be absolutely fine. Probably true for 5 yards away. At what point does it become an offence then?

Exactly if there is no distance stated in law then it comes down to interpretation.

On the refs shoulders it lay, the fact there hasn’t been a public outcry regarding the goal I think says it all.

Hard to spot? One of the highest rated guys in middle with one helper ten yards away who is designated to pick up what the ref cant see in the 6 yard box and 1ar who is not looking for offside here so was looking at what?!

I never saw the whole game so this is first time I have seen this tbh.

He’s certainly a throwback to another era when this was commonplace. Remember listening to the Billy Whitehurst interviews on Talksh1te and he would ask that they put one in the mixer early on and he’d clatter the Goalie! Let him know you’re there and all that, they’d get away with the first one in those days.

Forgot about the goal line official. Had he been over on the side that makes sense he would have been in perfect view.
This is the problem. He practically has the same view as the AR. The keeper himself may well have blocked it, same as the AR. It's a blurry video, but it doesn't look like a big swing, which is why I'm thinking it was easy to miss.

Also, Without checking, I might be wrong, but, was the only caution of the game for a foul ON Ramos?
Guys an absolute weapon. But would be first name on your team sheet.
I used to fall out with his ilk on Sunday League, he’s a walking card, I knew a midfielder who was similar, obviously different level but same script. I watched him specifically from the side on one game and I saw the stuff at corners and the WUM stuff that as a Ref you may miss. Wasn’t my game but he had 2-3 cautionable things that got missed because he was clever at it!
