The Ref Stop

Chelsea v Man City

The Ref Stop
I wondered the same. Can only think it’s because he dribbled it in to pick up. Happy to be corrected though

Also - undershirt?!

My Now TV box cut out on the replay. I thought he took a touch with his foot and then picked it up?

Haven't actually seen the clip of the incident, but even if this was the case the IDFK would still be taken at the point where the GK touched the ball with his hands.

Not a brilliant angle but looks very least the edge of the line when it was picked up a good yard in the box. Every yard matters at that distance and I'd have been livid if they'd scored.

Similarly, strange retaken corner when werner kicked the floor/flag then the ball which promptly dribbled a few yards. Why is it retaken not play on? Was a strange one.

I think Taylor has just had a brain freeze moment, no way that IDFK can be taken from anywhere other than inside the penalty area.

Never seen that before but it's there. Not sure how I feel about it being the answer to this question morally (It seems unfair to give Chelsea a 2nd chance when they messed up on their own) but seems plausible

The intent of that law is to prevent players moving the flag to get a better angle for kicking the ball though.

Law 17 - the corner flag post must not be moved (procedure). As I read it, the restart is a retake.
You are taking that out of context. It's to prevent players removing/moving the flag placement before the kick because it's a hindrance to their kicking.

I haven't seen this but if the flag was completely removed out of its place then there may be a case for a retake but if it was merely 'shaken' then retake is an error in law.

I think it probably fell under spirit of the game. The game was completely over at 0-3, it probably just seemed like the right thing to do to let them retake even though it probably was incorrect in law. I did watch it at the time and thought it was wrong, but then I found myself thinking "so what".

The problem is if they score from the corner. Can't just make it up coz you feel sorry for them, certaibly not in the pro game.

Of course, but many FKs aren’t taken on an exact spot. I’d never let that IFK drift out of the PA, as it could be confusing, but I’m not convinced it’s a big deal. Did anyone on the field care?

Don't disagree, but I'm struggling to see any other explanation for it.
I haven’t seen the exact play, but I suppose the R could have decided that since he kicked the flag, and then his foot touched it, that it wasn’t really “kicked” and therefore was not in play? Odd.

Would have been a massive talking point had it gone in though...at nil nil
