Iraq vs Jordan - Aymen Hussein dismissal

I thought it was excessively harsh; given that he was already on a yellow some discretion would have gone a long way. It quite possibly lost them the (knockout) game too.

Australia v Uzbekistan - 2023 AFC Asian Cup

Speaking as an Australian... I do not think that's a penalty. His arm is in a natural position for me.

    European Final Appointments

He recently had a poor game in the Europa League semi-final (Sevilla vs Juventus), including sending off Acuna with a second yellow for delaying the restart, seemingly forgetting that Acuna was already on a yellow.

    Club ARs, dissent

Thanks, that's a very good point. The shouts from the bench were not at the CAR - they were at me to alert me that the CAR had in fact flagged offside - apparently he raised the flag, but then lowered it before I saw it. I say "apparently" because I obviously didn't see it go up, and it was...

    Club ARs, dissent

This post is partly to debrief and partly for input. Had an interesting match today. This is about my 9th (?) game as a centre, so very new still! In fact I had not ever given out a yellow card before today - partly due to being new but also refereeing very young players who have been well...

    Hand Ball Leading to Goal

Play advantage and award the goal. If the handball was a deliberate attempt to stop the goal (which it wasn't in this case), caution for unsporting behaviour ("handles the ball in ... an unsuccessful attempt to prevent a goal") - but still award the goal!

    OFFINABUS?

In my league we don’t show cards below U12, but we can (and 100% should) send off players for offences like that.

    Advantage - offside

Thanks. I can't honestly remember when I signalled in relation to the pass! I suspect it was probably after. I wish I had a video of the incident to be honest (I also suspect the club AR, who was doing that role for the first time, may have got the offside call wrong).

    Advantage - offside

I had a tricky situation in a match on the weekend. This was my 6th match as a centre. Attacking team is down by 1 goal and we're approaching full time. Defender holds the attacker a few yards out of the penalty area, I wait, attacker shrugs him off and plays a nice ball through to his teammate...

    Penalty area questions

Hi all, I have some fairly basic questions that I am hoping can be cleared up: 1. During a penalty kick, can players have their feet on the lines marking the penalty area / penalty arc? Or do they need to be totally outside it? (I realise this is being a bit pedantic) 2. I have been doing...

Dutch Referee Blog - Week 5 Laws of the Game Quiz 2022-2023

FWIW I also answered just a PK, so I went and looked at the actual game to see what happened - no card.

DOGSO red right? Australia vs NZ

I thought the red was downgraded to a yellow because the ref played advantage (as per Law 12.3)?

That is an excellent plan! Not sure I'm all that well linked in with Australia's immigration policy sadly :(

    U8 handball threshold

Thanks for your reply and yes, I'm in Australia. Heh yes well, that's a good point, and I certainly don't believe we do - and I am pretty sure the vast majority of refs in the competition are not qualified. This includes me, although I am expecting to have my first qualification in a month...

    U8 handball threshold

I am a new ref and keen to get some input into the threshold for calling a handball for U8s. For the competition I'm reffing, the official rule is that an indirect free kick should be called when a player "handles the ball deliberately". Last night I was reffing red vs black: - red player...

    New Aussie ref

Hi everyone, Glad to have found this forum! I’m Phil, I’m 45 and from Adelaide, Australia. I am new to reffing - I did a couple of my son’s U8 school matches last year, and this year have done some of his U9 school matches and several of his U8 club matches. Probably around 10 matches in...
