Back Pass

Hi All, I have just started and had an under 11's game at the weekend. In the game a defending player passed the ball back to the goalkeeper who went to pick it up then stopped tapped the ball to the side about 4 inches and picked up the ball. I gave an Indirect freekick but I wasn't sure where this should be taken. I thought all fouls commited in the penalty area where an indirect free kick is given should be taken from the edge of the penatly area in line with where the offence occured. One of the manager said it should be taken from the place where the goalkeeper picked up the ball. Can someone clarify this for me.

It's not an "offence" until the GK picks it up - so that's where the IDFK is taken from. :)

Idfk in the penalty area is taken from the position of the offence in this case where the keeper picked up the ball. EXCEPT when in the Goal Area, for attacking team it is positioned on the edge of the goal area parallel to the goal line closest to where the offence took place and for defending team anywhere in the goal area.

Law 13.

Typically, in U11's, you won't have a Goal Area. If a GK handles a ball (with 6 yards of the goal) that has been deliberately kicked to him, you'll just have to improvise. Depending on the competency level of the kids, I'd also be lenient with the kids whilst educating them along the way

Hi thats great thx guys so within the goal area it should be taken at the edge of the goal area anywhere else from the position the goalkeeper picked up the ball provided the defender deliberatly kicked the ball back. If the Goal Keeper picks it up outside of the penatly area would the offence be a handball or passback?

Goalkeeper's special privilege to use their hands only applies inside the penalty area - once they leave that, any use of hands would be penalised in the same way as an outfield player.

and of course, you penalise the more serious offence (assuming the keeper picked up a pass outside the box) and deal with the handball and required sanctions and restart with a direct free kick rather than the back pass.

i know you know this graeme, just expanding for westy

If we're being picky, I'm fairly sure the law surrounding the "back pass" begins by specifying that the offence must take place inside their PA. And so it would follow that once the GK is out of the PA, it's technically incorrect to penalise him for a backpass - so the "more serious offences" question doesn't come into it.

yeah you're probably right, but was absolutely simplifying it for this example as an overall learning point!
