The Ref Stop

Brazil v Belgium

to put it simply, the boy who cried wolf?

Not for me as black and white as that, you would still be going out there expecting Neymar to be fouled, but you would have your wits about you at the same time
Given the publicity, you would not want it to be you falling for it next

The Ref Stop
Kompany made a terrible two footed lunge, connected with the ankle, obvious foul, in the box, ball in play, ref didn't spot it, obvious error... this is exactly what VAR is there to fix.

That VAR did not assist the referee in this vase is a disaster for VAR and the protocol. Brazil were denied a game-changing penalty.

It's another obvious incident where the inaction of VAR to correct an obvious error has clearly affected the result of the match. You can hide behind you 99.3% as much as you want but the stats do not tell the truth. It's rubbish. VAR has failed.

I disagree with that blanket view. Forget about numbers put out by FIFA for a moment. Yes var has field on occasions. On those occasions referee had also failed. So it would have been a fail anyway, with or without VAR.

However, VAR has also succeeded (more times than failed) on occasions when referee had failed originally. So on the whole having VAR is better than not having VAR.

While that may or may not be true (and the jury is really still out) there is no excusing the delay and the additional pressure the team's are placing on the man in the middle whilst the hierarchy have apparently spiked his guns..........truly appalling situation

To VAR, or not to VAR, that is the question!
Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer a VAR
The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune,
Or to take arms against a sea of troubles
And by opposing end them. To die—to sleep,
No more; and by a sleep to say we end
The heart-ache and the thousand natural shocks
That flesh is heir to: 'tis a consummation
Devoutly to be wish'd. To die, to sleep;
To sleep, perchance to dream—ay, there's the rub:
For in that sleep of death what dreams may come,
When we have shuffled off this mortal coil,
Must give us pause—there's the respect
That makes calamity of so long life.
For who would bear the whips and scorns of time,
Th'oppressor's wrong, the proud man's contumely,
The pangs of dispriz'd love, the law's delay,
The insolence of office, and the spurns
That patient merit of th'unworthy takes,
When he himself might his quietus make
With a bare bodkin? Who would fardels bear,
To grunt and sweat under a weary life,
But that the dread of something after death,
The undiscovere'd country, from whose bourn
No traveller returns, puzzles the will,
And makes us rather bear those ills we have
Than fly to others that we know not of?
Thus conscience does make cowards of us all,
And thus the native hue of resolution
Is sicklied o'er with the pale cast of thought,
And enterprises of great pitch and moment
With this regard their currents turn awry
And lose the name of action.
F*&k it..... Play on!!!! :)

Just a gentle reminder as I can see where this is going, please refer to the pinned post. We don't want to, but we will delete posts and people if threads are taken off topic.

Rusty does take his job seriously, much unlike the refs the WC sadly
Oh, they're taking their jobs seriously too.

Remember, we don't know what the directives for this WC are (much like we have directives for tournaments, etc that we do, this competition obviously has its own directives... and the match officials that adhere to those and take their jobs seriously are the ones who stay and do more games).

Good point. Don't forget there are both formal written directives and informal oral directives, and understanding the informal ones can be just as important as the formal ones. Fair or not, it's how it works.

Well, two tight games and I managed to tip both results correctly, never been much of a gambler but for today’s coupon I’m going for England and Croatia for the Semi Final. After that England v France final.... Apparently it’s coming home!

Great post AlexF
In real time, despite my bet on Belgium, I didn't think this was a penalty. Then when @cwyeary posted some freeze frames, my argument was smashed because the stills showed a blatant foul and potential risk of injury to Jesus. However, going back to this slow motion, Kompany appears to pull out of the tackle, the contact was trivial and again the Brazilian over-reacted. Added to the fact the ball had been booted out of play (an unwritten factor frequently accounted for in these situations), I'm back to thinking the VAR check got this right (albeit not black & white)

Yeah, I think that video actually reinforces what I initially thought. The first contact is trivial due to the defender pulling out, and by the time the knee makes any contact with the attacker, the ball is out of play.

Yes, that was my original view at the time. It's his trailing leg that gets most contact and by then the ball is long gone.

I still say that's a careless (bordering on reckless) tackle, which hasn't made any contact with the ball, and has made studs to shin contact with the opponent with the ball still in play.
