Coin toss

Morning all.

Can anybody just clarify for me the procedure re: coin toss. My usual method is offering the away team heads or tails for end and I usually will say the home team will kick off the first half.

Is this correct? I've never had anyone complain but can't see anywhere what the actual procedure is

Not quite. Away team choose heads/tails and if they guess right they get to choose ends. If away chose ends, home choose to kick off or not.

Team that wins toss chooses end.
Team that loses toss chooses to kick off the first half or not. <EDIT: Not!>

It’s clear on p85 and you should also see p93 on penalty shoot outs while you are at it.

No, the winners of the coin toss get choice of ends, the losers kick off the first half. This is stipulated in the LOTG and must be adhered to.

What isn’t stipulated is who tosses the coin, who calls heads or tails etc. People do this in different ways; me, I always toss the call myself and ask the away team to call heads or tails.

I ask the away team to call head or tails ( or yellow or white if using my flip coin)

I toss the coin and I let it drop (am 100% sure my match control is not compromised by me letting the coin drop or me having to pick it up)

Team who wins toss gets choice of ends, loser kicks off.

Should we get to extra time, then, I let home team call, then if we get to pens, back to away team

In a game where we go str8 to pens, its home team to call first or 2nd, if we had played extra time then we be back to away team calling first or second as home team will have called for toss pre extra time

Got a question on that actually;

Is it in the LOTG to do the coin toss procedure for extra-time? I can't seem to find it, but I'm likely overlooking it.

Just keep alternating. The team who kicked off in the first half, also kicks off for the first period of ET

Not explicitly. The reference to coin toss is made for kick off for 'first hlaf'. Both the normal time and extra time have 'first half' and second half in the lotg.

Oh and the lotg doesn't require the captains to be involved for the coin toss although it makes sense to have them.

That isn't right. You need to get the captains in again, the winner of the toss could then choose to change ends, they don't have to kick the same direction that they did in the first half of the normal game.
I believe you, but where is this stated?

I make away team call heads or tails and make home team flip the coin telling them to let it drop on the floor.

I havent really ever put much thought into this. I used to get 1 captain to toss, 1 to call. More recently I just get away team to call. However, the lotg gives no direction as to who calls, it just says the referee tosses a coin. Therefore its starting to seem to me that nobody has a choice and the referee should allocate a coin side and toss it.

Probably thinking about this way too much.
