County cup final appointment

Hi

Would there be any reason why one would Not be selected for a county cup final appointment?

I was selected for one last year but haven’t got the invite this year out of over 100 officials. I am on the promotion scheme and my admin is always great.

Just interested to know if it’s luck of the draw or if I have probably done something to upset people at the CFA

Thanks

There may just be someone better than you. Unfortunately, we aren't always appointed to finals and it is something we can either dwell on or just pass over and get back to refereeing how we would otherwise do it. In my league alone, there are over 350 officials, and with 20 league cup finals to do, across different age groups and genders, that means only 60/350 officials (17%) get appointed. This is just local to me, but that is very high compared to most leagues/counties. Unfortunately we just have to deal with it.

I had a middle on a semi final last year, and have got a line on a semi final this year.m. So always the bridesmaid, never the bride

I got x2 finals last year.

This year I doubt I will have any involvement.

No idea how I've done on the local merit table, as that is sent at the end of the year, but in order to get ready for my level 4 attempt I've signed up to more senior leagues, and have been hinted at to keep moas pretty available.

So I've not left my league. But I can hardly manage to fit them in. So I don't expect them to reward that with finals.

So maybe that has happened to you, have you dropped your availability for them, or maybe you've just had one too many bogey scores that have punished you on the local merit table.

Also I think I got 2 last year because I was new and made myself available for everything. Turbo keen.

Since I moved to West Riding 8 or 9 years ago I've never been appointed to one (did get last minute call ups twice due to late backwords mind). Active L4 the whole time...

Always bugged and clearly still does

Only a tiny percentage of officials can be selected to officiate a county cup final. The fact you have already had one makes it even less likely that you'd be selected for the following seasons.

I had one in my first season, as a 4O, but COVID meant that no finals were actually played.

After that I think we didn't have CC competitions for a couple of seasons.

I got one in my next season, a line.

Not had anything this season and appointments are out.

I know of a young lad, new level 4 who I massively expected to get a final this season after getting one last season, and he hasn't got one. He's good mates with the RDO as well.

I think if someone really does well in the season they will get one regardless of previous seasons, otherwise it's a case of try and share them out to different people over x amount of seasons.

where i used to live the same names often reappeared year in year out and the county senior cup final always had a football league official ref it.

Not like that now.

I've done a douzen cup finals but i now decline them as i no longer enjoy them.

League cups is still a bit of a closed shop.

That's because they hate you - being a transferee in from North Riding. He didn't kiss enough bottoms at WRCFA on your way up....

A lot of County Cup matches are handed out on "it's your turn"; so if you got one last year, don't expect another for at least 1/2 seasons. They tend on allow you to referee once in any cup competition. So if you have done a junior cup, you need serious promotions to get the more senior cup.

Cup finals aren't decided on the merit tables - look how the referees for are appointed to the FA / League Cup final. Not the best, but whose turn is it....

In my area is seems county league / step 7 leagues dish out cup final appointments based on club marks.
The county cup finals will probably be a mixture of county participation, such as county cup availability, county cup games completed, event participation such as core and probably successful promotion candidates/ observations. - that’s just my educated guess.

I've got only my second one this year. Will find out my role in the next couple of weeks.
I went 7-6 in 2018-19 and was given a sunday league cup middle. (the lowest standard)
Then I went 6-5 in 2019-20 and was given the next standard up of sunday league cup middle, but COVID cancelled it.
In 2020-21 there were still none due to covid and I got my level 4 in October 2021 (they didn't promote at the end of the 2020/21 season but carried the marks over)
I don't think there were any played in 2021/22 either, but then last year I wasn't surprised not to get one as I didn't referee from the beginning of December until the beginning of March.
