    Club Marks

Yeah it doesn’t affect me in any material way at all, it’s just annoying when you’ve had a great game but get marked down because their players were acting up. To be honest it can work the other way too, getting really good marks after a fairly average performance. I do think maybe managers...

    Club Marks

I find club marks to be an insanely unfair way of doing things. It’s no coincidence that my club marks in games where there have been controversial incidents, even when I’m 100% my decisions were correct, are lower than usual.

How do you hold your whistle?

Recently noticed that a lot of referees hold their whistle in slightly different ways. Some, (me included), have it on a lanyard, which they then either wear around their neck or wrap around their wrist. Some prefer to hold their whistle loose, which seems like insanity to me. I think I even...

    "Peer pressure"

No, it isn’t massively difficult sending the email itself - it’s massively difficult when you get given a fixture for a date you have closed weeks in advance. Programs specifically made for closing dates are much easier.

    "Peer pressure"

My league has just moved to pitch side. Last year was massively difficult though, we had to email, (not even text as nobody had his number), the ref secretary to close any dates. A lot of the time we’d end up with a game anyway and then have to chase the appointment up.

    Whole Game - S7

Cheers. I can submit the report confidently now.

    Whole Game - S7

Today I gave player a second caution - both offences for unsporting behaviour (reckless play). As this was in a County Cup match, it of course, needs reporting on whole game. All I really need to know is whether when submitting the report, one sending off report would suffice, or whether I need...

    New Ref

You are better off asking the league that question - you only need to submit a report if you’ve given any bookings/abandoned the game etc. A lot of the time, especially if it is youth football, (I don’t know what age group you were doing, or if you were doing open age), managers are told to...

    Pre-Match Kit Check

How and when do you guys do your pre-match kit check? Of course, I always try to do one, but it tends to feel a bit awkward and as if I’m disrupting the teams in their pre-match set up. I could do with some advice on when to do it so it causes minimal disruption or annoyance, but also so players...

Junior/Youth New Ref... First match 9v9 advice

I don’t know if I’m too late with this, or if your game is on a Sunday. I do 9v9 youth games currently, last season was my first full season, (with a few matches postponed for various reasons - mainly COVID). I wouldn’t expect the pace of the game to be overly fast, but if you are new to...

U12 Match - sending off offence

So I was refereeing a U12s match last Sunday. It was between two very good (not academy level, but generally accepted as the best in the amateur league), teams, who are both fairly well known in the local area. It was a 60 minute game because it was U12 9v9, between “orange” and “white”. White...

    England v Denmark

Both Maguire’s yellows were justified and he deserved them both. However there is no way in the world that is a penalty. But, most refs, including ones on here, have done it at some point and if he thought it was a penalty, then that’s his decision, he’s just doing his job.

A lighter thread - Your favourite decisions?

It isn’t really a decision but...about a week ago I had a fairly tense game. I gave three penalties (on reflection all were definitely the right decision). Green are given the first pen just after half time, which they score. This leads to them going 3-0 up, but complain at everything and...

    Pundits

That is absolutely dreadful. Even if the top level pundits and commentators just took 45 minutes to read and understand laws 11, 12, 13 and 14, it would save everyone who took the time to read the LotG from a lot of frustration.

    Pundits

I’m sure this will have been said before, but the lack of understanding of the Laws of the Game from many top TV pundits and/or commentators astonishes me. A lot of pundits have also previously been footballers at a decent level, and many of them have no idea what they’re talking about when...

    U12 standards

Not bend the rules, just give decisions in “the spirit of the game”. ;)

    U12 standards

I qualified last year as a referee, but due to the current situation I’ve not necessarily done many games. I’ve done a few very easy U8 and U9 5 v 5 games, alongside a few school friendlies. Anyway, this weekend I’m refereeing an U12 league game, 9 v 9 (obviously). I just wondered what standard...
