Handball looked deliberate to me.

But, I've been pointed to this which throws a spanner in the works...

Self-defence is a defence against all offences under the common law of England and Wales. It looks like this also applies to the laws of the game 🤷‍♀️

The Ref Stop
The main issue is surely whether it's a protective reflex or not. The distance is one factor to help determine this but so is the speed of the ball, as well as where it is heading. In this case the ball is travelling very quickly towards the face, and maybe takes a quarter or third of a second from boot to arm? I would find it difficult to justify that this was more than a reflex.

I’m really interested to hear from some of the more experienced refs in this page about this incident. By definition that’s clear Handball. But I’ve seen plenty of refs say no. Common sense alwys tells me these type of offence shouldn’t be Handball as it’s going hit the face/body anyway, so ball isn’t going to go anywhere else.

Everything I've been told through online training during covid (and this info was from a fifa ref and a fifa AR) was that if they had time to bring their arm up to their face, they also have time to move (or start to move) their head out of the way.

If a professional player will never duck out of the way of an opponents shot, why should they get to use their hand to block it in the name of safety?

Penalty given in the Real Madrid game from close range (2nd one), ball clearly going wide, player is trying to turn and keep arms in....
Harsh for me, in a similar way the one last night not given, this shouldn't have been...
