With respect to making oneself bigger, if it is merely a deflection, it will still be an offense. If the player deliberately plays the ball which ends up hitting his arm, probably not an offense as I understand what the guidance is today.

If he deliberately plays the ball into his own arm then offence (the word 'deliberate refers to 'into' and not 'play').

The real answer for OP is, you have to be there to judge it. It is next to impossible to prescribe what is a handball offence in words. IFAB have been trying to do that for decades and have not succeeded.

Here is the best you get, read it, make your best judgement on the day and sell he heck out of the decision.
