While this is true surely from the original pass (not to him) hes gaining an advantage by being in the position hes in.
Possibly in 1878 😉 but it is 2022 and gaining an advantage means something totally different to the exact English everyday use of the phrase, similar to interfering with opponent.

The LOTG defines how the phrase should be interpreted for the purposes of offside.

You'll not in law 11 it uses the word by after each offence type so for example gaining an advantage "by" which is the 1st indication that it means something else
