Game delayed due to referees communication devices failing.
Everything done - coin toss etc... then bang.
Ref goes off to get it sorted and comes back to a cheer by the fans.

The Ref Stop
It turns out the batteries on his headset died. I once couldn't find the whistle in my bag 2 mins before kick off. I wanted the earth to swallow me up. Levels of relief out of this world when I eventually found it after frantic searching. I can't imagine what it must have been like nerve wise to hold up a televised game of such importance cos your batteries died!

I wanted the earth to swallow me up.

I've seen this panic happen.

Twice over the years I've had assistants turn up without bits of kit. Once had the main ref turn up without his shorts.

They ended up using mine as I pack two of everything. But still, it's the frantic searching, the realisation, the oh f....... It's awful seeing it happen.

I've since gotten a wrist sweat band with a zip pocket, whistle and coin go in there, not forgotten either since!

I had that once before.
Evening fixture. Only game I've packed 1 pair of shorts.
Ref didn't pack his. His mum lived locally to his and was called to get them but by the time the bell was due to be rung she still hadn't arrived. The home club offered us a pair of old keeper shorts and to keep.it professional for the ref, I volunteered to wear them whilst he took mine. As we went to walk out after boot check in tunnel she arrived. Ran back into changing room and changed around.
Said to him he best remember that when he marks us lol

I walked to pitch N25 at Hackney Marshes, only to then realise I'd left the ball in the changing room. "Sorry lads, I'll be back in 15 minutes" ... :)

I was also 4th official on a televised game at Barnet and the referee and assistants had gone out for a warm up. It was chucking it down so I went out to see how bad it was, without realising the changing room door was on a lock that closed automatically. So when the three officials returned they were locked out. Caused a slight delay to the game as they had to find someone with a key, which turned out to be the Barnet manager Martin Allen. Not my finest moment ...!!

See, if you're a whistle geek and can't find the planned game whistle, you just pick one of the other dozen in the bag . . . .

My worst was when I was almost at a field when I realized my boots weren't in the car . . . and I was wearing sandals to drive over. Fortunately my wife took pity on me and drove them over.

(But to the pro game, I would bet the comms are provided and its not the ref who was responsible for having them ready.)

to touch on that, every single occasiion I had comms as ref or lino, the ref brings them, has them charged, sometimes charging in dressing room, sometimes the 4th sets them up and they are entirely the refs responsibilty.
Granted i never did Champ League group stage but i did do UEFA cup quslifying and agsin, ref and 4th bring their comms, ref responsible

My first ever game as an L4 (AR on Contrib game) managed to snap a lace when tying my boots. Mad panic to try and find a new one and then relace the boot . Don't forget to have spare laces in your kit bag folks ... :)

I have a bag in my boot with one of everything. Two boots, but you catch my drift. All of it is just well old kit but would plug a hole if needed
